Did anyone enjoy this documentary?

I saw this documentary this evening and found the machinery very fascinating and some scenes hilarious. The majority off the posters here however, seem to be shocked by the images. Am I the only one who enjoyed this film?

reply

I enjoyed it for sure. I didn't think it was very shocking, moreso thought-provoking. I'm curious to hear what you parts you found hilarious though.

The scenes with the chickens where they were falling off the conveyor belt and where they where shot into the right crate. It was funny how those cute furry balls underwent this treadment.

The scene with the dead chickens, where they are hung upside-down on a rail was amusing as well. They moved funny, like they were dancing to the same music.

The olivetree harvesting was nice as well.

"And I'm a maniac, maniac, maniac, maniac. Maniac for your love. For your love."

No seriously, almost everyone in the theater where I saw this movie was laughing at some off the scenes. It is funny how humanity found such cool ways to produce it's food.

I thought it would have been cute if those little chicks were shot off the conveyor belt into the free world... but considering that they were going to end up like the rest of those chicken, in horrid conditions, pumped full of antibiotics and no room to move, I thought it was very sad.

I've seen a PETA dvd where chicks were held and their beaks cut off. I guess it's to prevent them from fighting and killing each other because they are in such a closed environment they start pecking at each other. That DVD was pretty disturbing.

reply

You know what else would be disturbing? Going to the supermarket and not being able to buy some delicious chicken! Also, I'm pretty sure this doc had a scene of beaks being cut off as well. I couldn't tell exactly what the woman was doing with them, but I think that's what was going on.

I, too, found some parts pretty damn amusing, especially the little chicks being shot around by the machinery.

And while the PETA video may be more disturbing, at least this one is more accurate and not full of propaganda!

reply

It would be fun to see you go through the same treatment. I'd be rolling on the floor with laughter.

reply

yeah the poor chickens.. i thought it was quite funny too. In a slapstick sort of way. (yeah I know it's quite cruel)

anyway i enjoyed this movie, definetely. It showed science-fiction is not something of the future. It's here today.

i found the whole thing mesmerising and sickening. the scale of the food production is mind boggling. it made me question my shopping habits. made me question my place in our mechanized food chain. i don't understand how anyone can find chicks being stuffed into a tiny crate funny.

reply

When movies show people getting cut up and disemboweled, everything becomes entertainment.

reply

No. I saw it at the Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival and enjoyed it very much as well.
Actually, I think it became my favourite film of the year (that was in 2006).

what's wrong with you guys?. i can't believe that there is such level of sickness in this world. you guys are sick, bunch of phychos. This movie is distubing. People who enjoy this documentary are potential killers in real life. You guys don't have souls or feelings and are like those working in those factories. gosh, i understand now why the world has become an awful place of slaughtering every living creature. We just desserve the worst ending period.

You have to have led a pretty sheltered life if you are an adult and any of this shocks you.
How did you think food was processed???
My only response to this thing was "so what?"

reply

listen, i knew how food was processed but there's gotta be a way to make it less painful and quick for those animals? besides i don't get how people can enjoy the horrible slaughtering that goes into our daily food. We know it happens but people who enjoy it are sick.

I purchased the documentary because I had seen it before and found it to be beautiful, peaceful and very thought provoking. Nickolas did an excellent job. Some scenes were difficult to take in, i.e. the slaughtering of animals but I think it's also very important to watch. I, like many Americans, have become so detached from my food that it's easy to shovel it in, too easy, without appreciating where it comes from and the people who help to bring it to market.
