Who pays?

These home owners presumably have already spent a good chunk of change on crap (at least as deemed by Mr. Holmes). Are they the ones footing the bill for the repairs he does? I'm guessing the answer is no because never once have I heard mention of any cost. As far as I know, all the work on This Old House is coming out of the home owner's budget. Just curious. I'm also curious if any of the original contractors got sued.

The original contractors may get sued but by the customer not Mike or his team. I've always assumed that Discovery Channel or the station that runs Mike's show were the one's footing the bill. I don't think the home owner's pay him but the station does and all of the advertisers are the one's paying for it essentially.

I've only seen three episodes and he's talked about cost in each. The last one I saw he said it was costing the homeowners $20,000. I've just assumed the homeowners were suing in the episodes I've seen, because Mike said the work was not up to code or flat out illegal.

From what I can gather, the home owners pay some money (10-20% as stated by Mike in an article I read) and Mike does some 'coaxing' to get as much done for a much, much reduced pricing (or free if possible) to save the homeowners as much as possible (especially since some of them are pretty much out of money). He has a very good rapport with many of the companies/services shown in the show and inspires many to 'make it right' as he puts it.
