Who pays to fix these homes

I watch this show all the time and was curious to who pays for the renovations that Mike does. Many of the renovations cost $30k or more so do the people that he helps pay for some of this or does the show pay for everything? I would for sure completely trust Mike to do any renovations that we would need. Not only does he fix the problems, it's a great educational show for anyone looking to renovate their home.

I was watching The Hour last night and Mike says that the money comes out of his pocket. He says that useualy the families py around 10% but that he finanaces the rest. the house he did in califonia was $300 000 out of his pocket.

It states on his website that the "families" pay for everything but Mike and his crew. It isn't very descriptive but I would imagine that means that the family would have to pay for the material, and labour is free. And probably even most of the materials are heavily discounted if they go with something that Mike has contacts with... free advertising and such for the company if he mentions it. Most of the shows I've seen are extremely labour intensive so just paying for the materials is quite a bargain. And I would imagine that the contractor's that Mike calls in, eg. Plumbers, Electricians, Architects... probably work for a very low price or maybe even for free considering that they're getting free international advertising, plus Mike lists every contractor he's used on his website... and even lists what shows they appeared in. All in all, good stuff for everybody involved, IMO.

What good is "International Advertising" to a plumber or electrician? Do you think that someone in Perth Australia who needs a plumber will say to himself, Hey I know, I'll call this guy from Toronto to come and fix my toilet!!

yeah i am with u a read some were that them spray foam people work for the advertising and they are also a holmes approved product

That's what I was wondering. I was watching a show last night where the family got taken for $170k. I can't imagine that they could then afford to pay for Mike to redo everything.

During the episode w/ the Irish family's black tile redo, several times Mike mentions that the family is going to wind up paying for the job twice--the first time for the terrible contractor and then again for Mike's team.

Something else just came up, and you know how I put my heart into my work. Bye, Angels!- RIP, John

I've seen a number of shows where he basically guts a house and starts over, redoing plumbing, electrical, drywall, tile, etc. Some of these must run well over $100k.

Do you think that the Homeowners Insurance picks up part of the tab? And is he married and what is his age. I am looking for a husband.

Because of the show's being a television series, costs for the homeowners, who are likely to be strapped for cash due to the previous contractors' mistakes and/or frauds, are kept to a minimum (10% to 20% of the cost of repair). Some contractors hired on the show have even donated time, materials, and labor to help homeowners in need. The remainder of the work is funded by the TV production company (and indirectly, through the Canadian government, by tax credits), but in some cases, Mike Holmes personally contributes funds towards the repairs[3].

How does he afford to pay for this? I don't know anything about him other than what's in the TV show. I get he's a successful contractor by, but for this he'd need to be multimillionaire successful.

dolfanatic314 is exactly right. They mention this on their "Behind the scenes" episode.

on the behind the scenes episode he explained that the homeowners pay 10-20% if the project was fully paid for by the customers, or they pay what is left on a project that was not fully paid for by the home owners. Mike also pays for a fair chunk and most contractors on the show are volunteers.

so it seems it is very individual, and set up case by case. I thought it was awesome that someone was hired for Mike who said "No" to a project or to how much the crew would do, because he would take on all projects people asked for him to look at and pay for it himself.

This show is like any other show, mike holmes gets money per episode so do everybody else who are on the show......I mean this is a business. The labor might be free, but for them to star in the show is not.....or how else would they pay their bills..

reply

A lot of these cases are in court and Holmes can provide expert testimony on how a job was done improperly. So I think a lot of the money comes from court settlements.

From what I saw on an interview show, they said that if the families can afford it they pay 10 to 20%. HGTV also covers a large portion of the costs and gives advertising perks to contractors and suppliers who appear on the show or donate their services or supplies. If the cost of the reno goes above whatever the specified amount is, then Mike has been known to pay the difference out of his pocket. At least he puts his money where his mouth is.

And while advertising for a local Toronto area plumber may not help someone in another country, I'm betting the DeWalt name on tools isn't hurting anybody, least of all the DeWalt corporation.
