i have in my hand a piece of lumber....

Mike Holmes....wow what to say about him....I didn't know one person's ego could be so big. I had no idea that EVERY contractor in the friggin world was a crook other then big Mike and his ass kissing crew. Let's discuss.

I think he meant Mike's crew kisses HIS ass, not the customer's asses.

Two points:

1) Yes I agree, I could march an Army over his ego it's so thick.
2) What the hell do you think the show is about, great contractors who do fantastic work. What a boring show that would be.

“Hi I'm Mike Holmes, I love the fantastic job this contractor did...see you next week!”

The show is about scumbags who cheat good people with shoddy and incompetent work, and how he comes in and fixes up their mess.

Yeesh!

I don't take it so much as ego. I see it more as confidence, and the fact that he genuinely cares about his work (or at least does a great acting job for the camera).

The contractors he comes in after are scumbags. Sure, the homeowners are also at fault for paying up front before the work is done, but those contractors are snakes.

I found out about HOH and Mike Holmes by accident in a message board a few weeks ago and I must say I'm hooked.

I've seen Mike say the contractors did the best they could, they just didn't know what they were doing. Or one contractor did a great job, but the next one sucked. He doesn't always call them idiots. Just most of the time.

And I think the "ass kissing" is mostly a show for the cameras. These guys are getting great free advertising. They don't want to act like jackasses.

What big ego? Mike is a real man who's confident and competent. This world needs more of him.

I wish Mike would come to the states. I love what he does, what he uncovers, how he explains and teaches to his interns and expects the absolute best from his workers. There is nothing wrong with a strong work ethic. If he uncovers something do you expect him to cover it up like every one else has? I WISH he could come to my house!

I totally agree with you. I love Mike's show he's awesome and he seems to have such a fun personality.

If you don't like the show or Mike, THEN CHANGE THE CHANNEL! Maybe he should have a big ego b/c he does everything correctly. By no means does he say every contractor is bad and there are a lot of contractors that are crooks. I know this from personal experience and it sucks. It's great to see someone that loves to do their work and do it right the first time. Many contractors do cut corners to save themselves money and screw people by hiding their shady work.
I especially like how Mike points out why he is doing what he does and how to do it safely & correctly. I've even seen some episodes to where Mike has had trouble with some contractors that he has hired. Now days, a person has to be extremely cautious about the contractors they hire and have to watch over their work. Many contractors know that people are not fully educated on how things need to be done correctly and safely and the crooks out there prey on these people.
Mike is doing the right thing by working with cities and I believe even the government to help cut down on the crooked contractors out there. I love his show and would suggest anyone out there that is looking to do home renovations watch it.

I live in Toronto, and I do security ... I happen to have done a number of 'access control' jobs in late 2007, 'access control' is letting contractors into homes, or apartments while the tenant is away.

I asked every contractor out there "what do you think of Mike Holmes?"
Those who were confident in THEIR work thought he was a good man, a good contractor, and knew what he was doing (like they did).
Those who had work dismanteled, and ridiculed (and there were two who admitted it to me) hated him, and thought he was a "wanna be know it all contractor".

So my point is thus:
If you are a DIY, then you'll think he's good. If you have no reason to 'fear' or be 'worried' about him and if you would let him inspect your work with out worry, then you are a good contractor.

Those contractors who th ink Mike "doesn't do any work." or "doesn't know anything." or "is a wannabe." then you need to go back to school and learn how to do proper construction work.

I don't view it as Mike having a huge ego, he seems pretty down to earth. He strikes me as a very smart, confident guy with definite ideas about the way things should be done on his jobsite. You do things right the first time, even if that means it's going to take a little bit longer or cost a bit more. He doesn't cut corners himself and enjoys pointing out where previous contractors have.

Many people I've talked to who hate this show have a vested interest in getting away with doing crappy work themselves. I've hired renovators and I have to oversee them like a hawk. I generally pay by the hour and mention that I don't mind if they can convince me that something might take longer, or that some better (more expensive) materials might be needed to make the end result noticeably better or more durable or whatever.

The show obviously only deals with jobs that were badly done in the first place. They only do 13 per year. There are obviously hundreds of reno jobs per year in just their neck of the woods (let alone all of Ontario). So saying that the show portrays all contractors as thieves is insane.... they're only referencing a microscopic percentage of ALL jobs, and never once do they claim that they are the only crew who can possibly do a good job. In fact, they'll point out parts of the original job that WERE done right if merited.

I could do 13 shows a year just from houses in walking distance from mine.
