Finishing the series I can't help but be in awe of Dewey. Starts out a prisoner then ends up ruling the planet. Though Dewey isn't in it for the power. He's fighting for the dignity of the planet. Even willing to sacrifice himself.
Dewey is by far the best character of the show. Owning his brother (sword vs. gun AND he wins), owning the sages, spouting out political truths, or spouting out crazy BS Dewey was a great man.

Well... he was also a selfish psychopath who not only wanted to sacrifice himself, but the whole of the humanity (how generous) without asking people how they felt about dying for the sake of killing the scub coral. Dewey had loads of qualities, but because he was very stubborn and close-minded he actually failed to see a way out for himself and people who believed in him different than total destruction.
Sure he was completely *beep* insane. I had to admire his ability to own everyone.

Well dewey is sorta like a Hitler type character who thinks he can 'purify' the planet.
That being said I don't think you understand the character very well.
He was already powerful but was put in prison to control him. The leaders couldn't control him because he was so "uppity" & commanded respect among the military.
So when they lost the confidence of the people & the military they had to set Dewey free to address to Coralian problem & he turned around & overthrew the govt as a consequence.
