Lets be honest

I will be honest first, I have not seen the original Wizard of Gore, but after viewing the remake a couple of times now, I can confidently say that I enjoy it.

So what I want to know is why are people hating on the remake so much? Is it because they truly didn't like one or more aspects of the film or is it just because it is another horror remake? I would be willing to bet there are some HGL fans out there upset this was remade and without a second thought rated it with a low score.

But I don't know, that is just what I think. And I promise I do plan to get my hands on the original Wizard of Gore from Amazon soon.

One quick question about the remake, does anyone know who the band is when Ed and Maggie are at that party or whatever?

Thanks for reading.

I've seen the original: it's audacious, but cinematically, it's not very good. This trumps it easily in that department. The writing of the new film also dispenses with the overlong monologues of Montag, which is a relief.

Visually, it was a lot of fun, and the atmosphere it creates was great. Also, I thought the psychological-thriller aspect of it was well-written and conceived. As far as genre films go, this is pretty solid, especially considering it couldn't have cost very much to make. No complaints here overall.

HGL wasn't all that, he was just alright. This was spectacular in-comparison.

"HGL wasn't all that"

All what?

HG Lewis wasn't all that?

Who ever claimed he was all "that"?

I think your mistaken his fanbase. We don't watch his movies for suspense and scares, nor do we watch his films for high quality filmmaking. We watch HG Lewis flicks for the gore and their campy tone.

His movies are a blast, well some of them. And some are just downright bad with nothing good going for it. But he has a cult following for a reason.

Remakes while annoying generally don't bother me, but I heard this wasn't very good and most reviews I read don't even mention the HG Lewis version. Someday I'll view it though since I do like Crispin Glover

Let's do it to them before they do it to us.

Very nicely put.
HGL was "all of that" and more. Even he is amazed that people attempt to analyze his movies or to find meaning in them. They were what the were, premeditated exploitation films designed to make money. He couldn't compete with Hollywood on their level so he helped create the micro-budget filmmaking process. He is not only the godfather of gore but the granddaddy of the the no-budget filmmaker. Sure, Corman predated him but Roger lacked H.G.'s over the top excesses. I'm not usually a fan of remakes but I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Taking the basic idea and running with it rather than a true remake, the new film stands on it's own.

If you can't beat them, join them, then kill them in their sleep.

I saw it yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. The gore wasn't OTT or too graphic. I daren't see the origina though because I reckon it'll be too OTT with the gore!

"Hey! Ladies! That was fun!"

yes it is, but after all the title is 'Wizard of GORE', not 'Wizard of Semi-Bloody-Stuff' so what'd you expect ;-)
haven't seen the original in aaaages and only now i bumped into this page and being a hardcore anti-remake fanatic another frustrating rage came up upon seeing this. as usual i will see it (but without spending any money that's for sure) but reading it wasn't too graphic and the long monologues were minimalized i'm pretty sure i'll dislike it :-( i just loved those monologues personally. luckily i can still listen to some pieces of'm when i put on some death/grind cd's from my teens, especially Impetigo ^^ (one of their songs with samples is an ode to WoG and bares the same name)

"Torture and terror.. have always fascinated mankind. Perhaps whatever made your.. predecessors.. see the sadism of the inquisition, and the gore of a gladiator's arena... is the same thing that makes you stare at bloody highway accidents... and thrill of the terror of death... Today... television and films gives you the luxury of observing grizzly dismemberments and deaths... without anyone actually being harmed.. well ladies and gentlemen.. have you ever seen the sight.. of human butchery in person!!?? well tonight.. on this stage.. you will have the privilege.. of seeing.. such a sight!"

"Isn't there one lady amongst you considerate enough to satisfy your fellow human being's lust for blood?!"

i don't know man, there's a reason why many deathmetal and grindcore bands took samples of that movie :-) gotta love it

anyway, WoG original was one of my fav mindfrell films next to In the Mouth of Madness, Naked Lunch or Lost Highway and the b-film setup and over the top gore gave that extra touch to it :-)

curious what crispin glover made of the good wizard eventually... i think he'd pull it off
