People who've seen the movie only plz

I'm sick of hearing from people who saw a 60 second trailer and decided if this movie was good or not. I wanna know what people who've actually seen the entire movie thought of it.

reply

I write for a magazine and I saw it today. I expected to HATE it -and no, I was lucky enough NOT to see Norbit so I didn't have that one as a reference- and it was a pleasant surprise. A very sweet comedy, and Eddie Murphy was quite funny in his two roles.
To compare it with other summer 2008 comedies, it's not a complete crowd pleaser like Hancock, but I found it funnier and more endearing than, say, Get Smart.

reply

I have been catching movies all summer and I SWEAR I never saw a trailer for Meet Dave once... I caught the movie with a friend since my boyfriend and I promised to catch Wanted, Hellboy II and Get Smart together (already saw Hancock)... When she mentioned the movie, I had never heard of it...

I went to see it, but didn't know what to expect... Didn't know it was a "family movie..." The only folks laughing were the children... And it was for things that weren't even funny (e.g., overkill on "Welcome to the Gap")... In the end, I will have to say this is one of the worst movies I've ever seen... All I wanted to do was go home and watch Trading Places or Coming to America to redeem perception of Eddie Murphy's movies...

Outside of Shrek (i.e., movies where we don't have to see him), he should give it up...

reply

What about serious roles, like in Dreamgirls? In his older age, he should move to more serious roles LIKE TOM HANKS DID, as he started getting older.

reply

Maybe so, I think Eddie is a fine actor and can pull off drama as well as anybody (maybe even tom hanks) Not a big Hanks fan but Eddie Murphy is so great it's sad to see him stumbling. I didn't see the movied and based on what I read hear don't think I will

HAHAHAHA you suffer from delusions of grandeur. Your first sentence proves that one. I would like to add that your opinion is noted, but many would disagree with the stance of your taste in movies.

reply

I just saw the film today.
I'm not particularly an Eddie Murphy fan, but i loved this film.
Very funny, very intelligent. Well written (what a surprise!!!)
I think it's Eddie Murphy's best role since Beverley Hills Cop.
People in the cinema were laughing more than any film that i've seen for a couple of years ... and I've been going to the cinema about once a week for as long as i can remember, so i see quite a lot of films.
The story got a bit sentimental at the end, like a lot of American films, but other than that, it was great.

I would definitely recommend this film to people that love Sci-Fi as there are a lot of references to Star Trek and Babylon 5 etc etc etc ...

reply

I saw it. I liked it quite a bit. It wasn't quite as funny as I thought it would be, but on the other hand I found Eddie Murphy's acting to be surprisingly good in the way that he managed both personae, and the message of the film was appropriately subtle and relevant.

I just came from a pre-screeing in the UK, as it opens here on the 18th. I hadn't seen a trailer so had no expectations.

I really enjoyed it, and I was far from the only person laughing in all the right places. Like the above poster, I'm impressed with Murphy's ability to to the serious role as well. I'd love to see the blooper shots...

I'm really glad to see an original script too. I'm sick to death of formula remakes and sequels. I'm even Batmanned out.

A good comedy was worth getting up on a Sunday morning for. Make some more guys.

reply

I saw the movie in it's entirety too. I didn't see any previews and had no expectations (I didn't even know Eddie Murphy was in it -- I watched it cause there are young actors in it).

I think it was hilarious and the acting by Eddie Murphy, especially in the
beginning when he's still trying to get the robot under control, is very good!

I didn't see anyone that made me think: what a bad acting. I was just in the movie, and was watching for it's humoristic content - for for Oscar acting preformances.

There is a certain lack of depth that probably could have been there; say - if Steven Spielberg had directed this movie, I'd probably not just have laughed but would have been moved on several occasions due to other emotions as well... but hey, who cares? You still have to laugh.

reply

I actually laughed throughout the whole movie. It was a cool concept. And if you are one of those people who don't go to movies expecting it to be an Oscar nominated film and just go to lay back and laugh, you'll like it.

reply

I liked it. It was entertaining.

reply

It has a few good funny scenes. Overall, the movie isn't bad. Just your average feel good comedy.

I loved this movie! I've seen it twice, and we were the only ones in the theater both times. It's a shame so many people aren't even giving this movie a chance, because it was even funnier the second time, and I agree that it's just a feel good commedy.

I also thought the movie was quite humerous. And I know I was not the only adult laughing his or her ass off

reply

^^^^Totally agree!!! Everyone is so uptight these days; all this movie is is a harmless family film with a little science edge to it. And I loved watching Murphy act his way through this movie in both roles! A lot of people on here commenting on how bad HE was in the film couldn't pull off what he did. And the script isn't TERRIBLE, could be better but its not horrible. its a far cry from Norbit, i'll give it that.

reply

i saw it yesterday with my son. It was pretty good. It does get a little boring towards the end but overall, entertaining.

A side note. Eddie Murphy is the most talented guy in Hollywood not named Jim Carrey. His performance was amazing. i don't see why people don't appreciate the work that he puts into his roles. They prefer Jonah Hill spewing curse words at a rapid pace. Eddie will wind up like Jerry Lewis. they'll appreciate him when he's gone (even though Jerry Lewis is still alive).

reply

Just saw it and I have to say, it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It was also much more of a family movie than any commercial I'd seen let on. Don't waste your time or money.

My son drug me to the theater this weekend to see this mess. He seemed to enjoy it well enough, though when I asked him afterward what he liked he just talked about one scene over and over. Whatever appealed to him didn't work for me, probably because I don't find car accidents funny. To be fair, I thought they were funny when I was his age.

The best part about "Meet Dave" is that it's harmless: it's every bit as funny as Norbit and doesn't have the venom. I'd say it's even funnier than Norbit, expect that it's not funny. At all.

reply

I just saw it with my young son's who wanted to see it, and it is not half bad. It can get boring at points, but the writing and acting are what you can expect in a family movie. There are multiple plots happening, so it's better than most comedy's. I enjoy sci-fi movies because they are escapes from reality. Go see this with your young children, they'll like it, and you probably will to.

reply

I've just seen it and thought it was great. There are a couple of parts early on that are a little cringe-worthy and overly over the top but overall it was a fun and entertaining movie. In my opinion Meet Dave is well worth a look, especially if you have children, they will love it.

I watched the movie last night with a bunch of friends. While I will agree it's not best comedy of the year it was by no means bad AT ALL. It was a well written movie with a decent plot. A few jokes were absolutely killer, like when he first is asked his name..... I do see how this might not be one's favorite movie but I don't really understand how anyone who watches other comedies these days like all the Will Farrel stuff, etc. could not think this is funny....

reply

I saw this movie last night too. I've been avoiding Murphy for a while, Norbit really seemed terrible from the trailer.

However, I watched and and as said above there are some really great jokes in it, the comedy tails off towards the end but the first half of the film is great.

A good film by murphy, funny and entertaining.

reply

I really enjoyed this movie. I was debating whether to go see this, but when I left the theater I know I made the right choice. Much better than I expected. I never know with Murphy. Some of his films are good and others miss the mark.

Reading through what most people have said, it doesn't seem so bad as the 3.4 it's recieved on IMDB. So what gives with the score? Eddie Murphy haters, or?

I'd say after Norbit it's 'cool' to hate on Eddie Murphy films.

Norbit was bad but it wasn't incredibly bad. It was just a really poor film all around. Definitely not 'worst of all time' or anything like people have said.

Meet Dave looks interesting but I can't see myself putting the money down to see it, sadly. I think I've lost a bit of faith in Eddie Murphy. No doubt I'll see it at some point in the future as these reviews seem pretty solid.

reply

Honestly, I really liked Norbit I did not understand the backlash on that movie. it's like America wants to be polically correct when it wants to be.

As for this movie, I did not like it as much as Norbit....I thought a lot of the suppsoed jokes fell flat. I think part of the reason was is Eddie Murphy was a stiff robot.....he was without emotion. Eddie is best when he is able to be crazy Eddie. That being said, I still enjoyed the movie. it wasn't great but it wasn't terrible either.

If I had to pick worst Eddie Murphy movie I have seen it would be Haunted Mansion. but I did not see Pluto Nash and a few other movies from that era that I forget their names.

reply

there were some funny moments in it but other than that it was a rly dumb movie with a dumb plot..it was just ridiculous
