An embarrassment for all envolved

When Bill Duke introduced his latest film Cover, I thought I was going to see a film of great integrity dealing with a subject that was long over due. How wrong I was. This film should be buried to never see the light of day. It is perhaps the single most homophobic film EVER made.
The writing/story is laughable, the camera work unbearable, everyone on the screen is so badly made up they look as though they are wearing masks.Whom ever did the make-up should never be allowed near a film set again. There is so much wrong with this piece of trash, I don't feel i need to spend more time writing a comment then it took to write this abominable, offensive screen play.Shame on everyone envolved.

Please tell me its a least hysterical in a camp classic sense like this review suggests:

If unintentional humor defines Camp, then this film takes the prize. That however is not my definition. This review is way too kind. As I stated earlier, everyone who worked on this trash should be tarred and feathered. This film is an insult to whites, blacks and anything in between.

I saw the previews to this on a DVD I rented and I couldn't believe the plot. It seemed really homophobic. And then I read review quotes on Rotten Tomatoes and it sounds as if I was right. Then I came on here and read this. Hopefully nobody sees this as it's sure to be a big piece of crap.

There are no WORDS to explain how bad this film is in dealing with an important subject.

I absolutely have to give my two cents worth of a review. I saw this film last night. I had no idea about the twist. Don't want to mention any spoilers here. But boy, did I not see this coming. My comments however are directed at the person who did the makeup for the woman who played Valerie. Why on earth was she so unattractive. She's only 39 years old. Vivica Fox is older and boy did she look better. As a matter of fact, all the other ladies looked better. Tehe actress who played Valerie looked like she did not wear a stitch of makeup in the whole movie. I mean, for god's sake, she's married to a psychiatrist, she lives in a big gorgeous house, and she can't comb her hair or put on make-up. They really dropped the ball in the makeup department on this particular movie. All I kept noticing was her plain face. Everybody else looked great. Ruined the whole movie. But I did enjoy the scenes in the support group with those women and Patti Labelle yelling at each other. That was very humorous. I really liked this film. But the makeup man should be shot.

I also haven't seen the film - I guess it hasn't been released on home video yet, since it only has 22 ratings on the IMDb.

I would have thought the black community would be more socially responsible than to make a film like this, if what you say is true. They should know by now who's directly responsible for AIDS for becoming a black crisis - Republican politicians. But I haven't heard a thing from any of the few reviewers who have screened this movie, about this movie going after politicians. Instead, they go after who they identify as being un"Christian."

If Jennifer Lopez's film, Enough, hasn't become a camp classic by now, I don't see what hope Cover has...

there are many things in your post i find quite ignorant and even deplorable, but none as perplexing as your revelation that a homosexual with AIDS will show signs of early aging compared to a hetereosexual without age. that's obvious? what does it prove? if the person was a heterosexual and with AIDS they would still show early signs of aging. get a grip, this is the 21st century and you're embarassing yourself.

Well just to give a different perspective of this film. In all fairness, it perhaps is not the best film, and most likely won't win any major awards, but it still is not as bad as the original poster is saying. I think his review is a little harsh. I agree that this is a very important issue, and while some aspects of the film were bad, others were not. I think the ladies church group was totally unneccessary, and also the gay guy who joined; I didn't like the role he played. He wasn't needed, and that part was kind of lame. This was just the story of this one woman and this one family, and I think a lot of it probably is similar to what many other women in that situation have experienced such as thinking they have the perfect marriage, and the perfect family. It seems the OP wanted to see this told more from a documentary perspective, and this movie was not trying or intending to be a documentary. It's simply 1 drama focusing on 1 situation. It may not be a great film according to some, but I commend Bill Duke for at least making an attempt and putting it out there to possibly open some eyes that could still be very blinded. Nobody else seems to want to touch a movie about down low men. It wasn't the best, but it wasn't all bad either. I think he was just more trying to make a drama with the subject being a focus of the characters, insteady of trying to make a serious movie about just the subject itself. Even though I already knew what it was about, I found myself getting involved and interested in watching the story unfold, and it was a welcome change to see this type of movie with black characters instead of the usual stereotypical type of movies we usually get. I suggest everyone interested just see it for themselves. Just another perspective!

..I had to fast-forward thru the religious mumbo-jumbo.. which the movie could have really done WITHOUT!!!!

I liked the movie. True, there was the 'straight-to-video' quality about it, but it was def entertaining. I am not a 'dl' black male, so I imagine that 'they' will see discrepancies and stereotypes of a homophobic nature. But, the film was trying to tell a story, and make a point which it did. I `commend' Bill Duke and all of the actors.

straight to DVD fare.

I too, didn't see the plot twist coming, but my girlfriend did.

All in all I'd give it a 4 out of 10 stars.

And I didn't even think about the makeup issue until reading it here. I thought Vivica looked just as bad. I think Aunjanue Ellis is very beautiful off-screen and yeah they make her look tired and weary in this movie. Louis Gossett never looks good, particularly because his grill is so wrecked but his acting is always very good. Clifton Davis Jr had on too much makeup, but he's always convincing and on point with his acting - he's a veteran.Roger Guenveur Smith is also a very good character actor, Paula Jai Parker NEVER looks good in my opinion and her acting is even worse. Leon sucks as usual, no matter what role he's in.

The "..looks like you have some dust in your eye.." mess. What the crispy hell is that?? I've never heard of that before, and apparently that's a GOOD thing, cause somebody will most def get chin checked for that schit!

In response to your comment that Aunjanue Ellis looked tired and weary in this movie...

I thought Aunjanue's character was made to look that way on purpose. I would expect the character to look tired and weary after catching her husband with another man, being arrested, and interrogated about Bryan Chambers's murder. Just my opinion.

It's great for "so bad it's good" night though! My sister and I were rolling with laughter the entire runtime.
