Too Slow Paced (some spoilers)

I like it, though I think Colour of Magic was far better. Acting was superb all around, though Teatime wasn't that great.

The real problem with this film was the story, the whole toothfairy episode is really not moving story forward at all. And overall, I felt it very slow paced, there is much idle dialog that isn't really need to be there, especially with Susan. You know the whole deal about Hogfather from the very begining, but nothing happens until the very end.

There really isn't happening that much in the whole film:
- Death plays hogfather and gives away presents with Albert
- Susan is worried about missing Hogfather, but it takes two hours of film time to her to decide to do something about it
- Teatime tries to take over the toothfairy's castle during the whole film.
- And Wizards are there, but they aren't really doing anything important about the plot

Actually the real problem is that there isn't that much character development. And Marc Warren (Teatime) really ruins the bad guy, he could have been so much more... alive! Teatime character felt interesting at the start, but what he really does is, that he gives nasty looks and shovels bad dialog after he kills someone.

I'm sure the book makes whole lot of more sense, but this movie felt like nothing is really happening there.

I agree. The thing was tooooo sloooow. They talked too slowly, the shots lingered forever ( like when they showed a plaque on a door), it just did not move.

reply

The problem is the producers had to have 2 episodic movies, which is why the pacing is ridiculously slow.

reply

While I agree that the pacing is rather slow I still enjoyed it. But yes, part of me was "get on with it!"

I rather liked Marc as Teatime, though. Ah well, matter of taste.

I would court you with more grace...

reply

I disagree it was faster pace for me and I thought it was better edited than the book itself!

reply

Agreed! I don't even think it made sense for them to spend so much time at the tooth fairy castle. Teatime never even tried to kill nor even ENCOUNTERED Hogsfather! this movie had some fun parts but overall too slow and convoluted.

Have you read any discwolrd books?
And the hogfather film was almost a perfect transaction between book and film, (by that i mean they left hardly anything out, and kept the style of the book perfectly.

And im sorry but there ae a few of your points that are just wrong (probably from lack of attention because the film clearly didnt interest you much) for example,

- Teatime tries to take over the toothfairy's castle during the whole film.

He has actually taken over the castle he is just trying to get into the last room, the point he was in the castle was because they needed to use the children's teeth to stop them believing in the hogfather. (without this plot there would be no need for Deaths or Susans roles) Also that was how it was in the book.

- Susan is worried about missing Hogfather, but it takes two hours of film time to her to decide to do something about it

This is because her character really doesn't want to be involved in that world any more, she just want to be normal.

- Death plays hogfather and gives away presents with Albert

That is so the 'sun' would rise in the morning (also very funny at times)

- And Wizards are there, but they aren't really doing anything important about the plot

They were trying to work out what was happening and why it was (this is so they can explain things that viewer/reader doesnt know but needs to, to understand the other plots, e.g the nature of belief and causality of the disc. Also they are the creators of HEX (the 'computer') and he was vital to the plot.

I totally agree with you about the slowness of the movie. Even the ending is so unexciting, it's just slow. There's no climax, no tension, everything is calm and peaceful. Nobody seems really involved in the story, Teatime could do whatever he wants, it doesn't seem to be very important.
I know the film is quite faithful to the book, the story is still quite good, the characters aren't great though, but I think it should have been shortened and changed a bit. It's still a good but not great movie, and at least it didn't end up like some awful comics or video games adaptations.

reply

I wholeheartedly agree.

And to the fella that disagrees it's not enough to stay faithful to a book to be a good film. Some things *do* have to be changed, the pace *was* far too slow, there was little character development and no excitement or convincing scenes throughout.

I saw this only recently and only because it was based on the reverential discworld (so yes, I do read the novels, though I can't read 'em faster than pratchett writes 'em)

This was disappointing waste of time; I could've invested it into one of his novels!

I enjoyed the first 20 minutes but once they started with the wizards I was like what does this have to do with the plot. About 30 minutes in and I had completely lost interest. Teatimes acting was compared to Willy Wonka and it was rumoured that the actor had just watched the movie before filmong this and I can believe it. I shouldn't expect much from a world that sits on top of a giant turtle that apparently never eats anyway.

i liked it but yes parts of it felt to drawn out

you will have to forgive the lack of full stops lack of proper spelling im dyslexic but not stupid
