Who was Susan's father?

We know that Death was Susan's grand-father, but do we know who Susan's father was, or who her mother was?

reply

A long time ago, for unknown reasons, Death adopted a human baby girl, who was abandoned somewhere. When she was 16, Death took on a human apprentice. The two fell in love, and the result was Susan :)

Thank you for your answer.

Hard to believe that good ole death, callous and uncaring as it is, would become sentimental ages ago and adopt an abandoned girl..............having only seen the film, would that be Death's assistant, the elf, that theoretically would have been Susan's father?

He was the apprentice for Death in the film Hogfather.

What do you think?

reply

No-one knows why Death felt the emotion to adopt her, but he did :) nono, Albert (the old man/elf) was simply Death's butler. Mort, his old assistant, used to be a farmer boy, who met Death at something like a career fair lol, and Death took him on as his apprentice, and Mort sometimes did Death's job. Mort and Ysabelle (Death's daughter) started off hating each other, but fell for each other, and Death went crazy and kicked them both out of his house, and long story short they became a duke and duchess, had Susan and died shortly after :)

If you're interested, another Susan story was adapted, into an animation, which I'm sure is available on amazon. Its called Soul Music, and is based before Hogfather, it explains some of her past :)

Actually I don't think Death is uncaring. He knows he provides people a valuable service and seems to genuinely like humans. In Reaper Man he seems to like the people around him.

I think Death is one of the most popular characters on diskworld because even though socially awkward he is actually one of the most human.

Sometimes, Just Sometimes, the joke's on you.

Death is the Angel who conducts us to the next life. Why should anyone think he is callous and uncaring.

reply

Just thought, if death took on a human form when the baby he adopted was 16 and they fell in love, wouldn't that make death Susan's father not granfather?

reply

Susan's father is Mort, Death's apprentice, not Death himself.

reply

That would be Mort. Her mother is Ysabell.
Mort was briefly Death's apprentice (Discworld book #4, 'Mort')
Susan is introduced in 'Soul Music' (book #16), her parents died when their coach crashed.

reply

From the rest of the Discworld novels, I would imagine her father would be the character Mort. I think he had his own story in one of the books, where he was made into Death's apprentice.

reply

Mort.
He was deaths apprentice.

Death evolved as it were, pratchett explains it through the books that while he started off as the emotionless personification of death over time he became curious about humans.

To try to understand them better he adopted ysabell and that curiosity became something approaching affection, which continued to grow with Susan.
