great direction/casting/set design

basically covers it. have been watching this show in the states on
national geographic. surprised I'm the first to comment, as it's a
surprisingly well made series. great reenactments spliced with actual
interview footage of the detainees (who range from smugglers to
hostages to wrongfully imprisoned travelers). really artfully handled,
have yet to see a bad episode. seriously hope this show is still being
produced. highly recommended.

also, I don't know why there appear to be two entries for this series, but I believe this may be the official:

I definitely agree. The filming of the re-enactments are really great. Much better than most shows.

This is definitely one of the better shows on television right now. I think a part of the reason why there aren't many people posting on the board here, is that many people in the States do not realize that the series is an import from the UK, or that it is called Banged Up Abroad in the UK. I have no idea how popular this is in Britain, but judging how often it plays on National Geographic, I'd say it must be fairly popular in the States.

Most fans on IMDB from the States probably search for 'Locked Up Abroad,' and don't notice that it an alternate title for Banged Up Abroad.

Love this show-but definitely know it as Locked Up Abroad
