What were the director & writer aiming for in this film?

The title of this thread is rhetorical.
After watching the movie, I was left wondering what the filmmakers' artistic intentions had been. Telling the story from the perspective of an insider. The gory scenes of all the shootings (like that scene in Bonnie and Clyde) & of several bombings.

Anyway, there is an interview of the director that helps explain a lot about what the filmmakers intended, and also gives a lot of background info that helps explain some things that might not have been clear to the viewer, especially for viewers who are not German.
