The Humanity, not the Zombies

For those who watch this for a zombie flick, I can understand their disappointment. This is not a zombie flick; it is a humanity flick, with zombies.

This beauty of this movie is the subtext. It is a statement on multi-culturalism and the demand to conform to social norms. The Zombies can represent any modern stereotype - from homosexuals to immigrants, people with HIV or disabilities, homeless, drug addict - pick your discrimination!

It is a statement about society's respect for the individual. We want to think of ourselves as socially permissive; accepting of differences; PC.

But the more people just want to be left alone, the more our fear-driven prejudices emerge. Through social outcasting, stereotypes become self-fulfilled prophesies, even if only in our bigoted minds.

A truly wonderful film. Just not a zombie movie.
