This is why you don't have a half All-Stars/half Newbies season...

It is clear from this season that the newbies were overmatched versus the All-Stars. So I don't think they will ever do this again.

Personally, I loved the first All-Star edition, and wanted a season where they did All-Stars again. But as a Survivor fan as well, I wonder if there's the same internal politics. Even though Survivor is having another All-Star season coming up, my understanding is historically there have been many people running Survivor who don't like it, even though the fans usually love watching the All-Star seasons. So as a "compromise," they bring popular players back (one season was 50/50), but go with the newbies.

So that's a long-winded explanation on what I think happened on Top Chef. There were some people who wanted an All-Star edition again, and some who didn't. So this season they compromised with half and half, and look what happened.

Personally, I love having the alumni come back every so often to play, so I would have preferred an entire All-Star cast this season.

Except for Sheldon and Brooke, I didn't care for these All-Stars. Kacey hasn't really grown from her last two stints. Still whines and can't take criticism about her food. Please, Top Chef, don't make us endure a fourth time with her.

Katsuji comes off too aggressive and manipulative...and John I have mixed feelings about. Sometimes I feel incredibly sorry for him, and other times I want him to swallow his own head. But I was truly sad to see Silva go. I was really pulling for him.

Sheldon was great as a one-time appearance; Brooke, who seems one-dimensional and you can tell dedicates her existence to solely cooking. She's like a cold fish.

I'm not a Brooke fan, either. I really liked Silva and would've loved to see him somehow pull it off, especially after losing his business to an arsonist.

I thought Jim was adorable. I wouldn't have minded putting him in my pocket and walking around with him all day, but he went out rather early. Casey is a no go, no go. I don't care for her passive aggressive attitude. So, for me, all that's left is Sheldon. He seems truly thankful to be there and has only gotten better since he was on the show.

Hearing him say he lost his hair after the ordeal was terrible. I never liked the Sudden Death Quickfires but since it has claimed Jim, I hate it. I think it's going to be a Top Chef regular, unfortunately. It was sweet seeing Sheldon fathering from thousands of miles away on the phone. He had the back injury and pain and sacrificed so much for his large family that he loves.

Yeah, I felt this was kind of unfair. Especially the way they kept pitting the rookies against the veterans so much.

All "All Stars" would have been better IMO. Followed by a new season of Newbies. This half-baked idea was a flop. Could it be they just could not get enough former contestants to participate?

To be fair, they aren't billing it as half newcomers and half all stars. It's half newcomers and half returnees. Not sure several of the returnees qualify as all stars.

In any case, its always extremely lame when this or any reality show brings back returnees to compete against newbies. Either have all newbies or all returnees. Top Chef seems to like to sneak in a few returnees every season.
