In general, I can see it happening because of Context. If you're not expecting someone or something to be somewhere, you might shake off/dismiss a familiarity. Their family members were miles away in other states, there was no reason for them to think they'd suddenly show up there.
On the other hand, of the remaining 4, Sheldon is probably the least self absorbed. They were so busy making sure they were telling the other person what to do they didn't pay attention to the voices or really care who the other person way. Plus, I noticed Sheldon's wife was really the only one who actually said a complete sentence early on. And it was at the beginning before there was a rush to complete the dish.
Also, noticed John's wife only said singles words, except once.
Brooke is usually such a nervous wreck over what she's doing, she doesn't pay attention to others
And I doubt Shirley can hear anything over her own screaming.
I don't trust people who don't like pets and I don't trust people who pets don't like.
