Ugh I hate the older daughter

I hate her. I just hate her. Her beloved dad essentially comes back from death and all she wants to do is tell him how much his brother is better than him when he's clearly falling apart. Her character seemed very mature and should have been more sensitive or stay the *beep* out of his problem. Ugh I hate that girl.

yeah, she got on my nerves.

especially at the dinner table, she crossed the line big time there.

and a COKE....I'm sorted

just saw this movie and her and that balloon then she yells out ugh.. that's all I can manage right now..

"when he's clearly falling apart"

Kids have a lot of trouble empathizing... the world revolves around them. I can definitely relate to the type of behavior she shows here. Sometimes people are hurting you (not on purpose, but you don't know that), and you just want to hurt them back.

Anyway, I felt that the behavior made sense... the specific dialogue not so much. Her frustration is certainly understandable. When she says "and you weren't even here for my birthday" it really shows how hurt she was by him not being there. And yeah, if we were talking about an adult here I might be tempted to say "I'm sorry, was my extremely traumatic imprisonment an inconvenience for you??!" but yes, it was an inconvenience. Losing a loved one is traumatic.

"You're just mad he'd rather sleep with uncle tommy" is a dumb line and could easily have been replaced with something like "I wish uncle tommy were my dad" but then that wouldn't play into Sam's suspicions.

I've gone on too long, but my point was that while it is easy for us to see that Sam is poised to break (and rightfully so), it's not necessarily obvious to his daughter, as she is preoccupied with her own issues (which may not look so severe by comparison, but you know she's young... kids can't handle as much as adults).

Also sorry if I overuse parenthesis :)

That poor little girl couldn't handle the situation. Her sweet dad didn't come back from war but a bitter man who accused his wife she cheated on him and had changed totally.
If you look closer Isabelle was already jealous because Tommy took a a girlfriend for the visit. This new person was the center of the attention like her sister was before. Instead of giving her some attention too she was constantly told to be quiet or stop.

In an earlier scene Isabelle reveals that she is in a similar position than Tommy (probably since he was a kid). Everybody thinks Maggie is cute and she feels neglected.

Great scene later when she asks her mom for forgiveness. I've to say the actress did a great job, very believable.

It’s just so sad that the variety of the world should be used as a contentious issue.

You're right, why whould a small child feel more connected to the cool uncle who cares for her and totally gets her than to this bitter, angry shell of a man who doesn't even look like her father? She knows something is up, but can do nothing about it. Her reaction was totally believable and the actress who played her did an amazing job.

i think i just have a problem with her face

I agree with you. I was completely amazed by this little actress and I can't say I really blame her for how she acted, she was a child and knew something was wrong with her dad, and lashed out. I found it believable and understandable.

Yuzaki, spot on.

she was horribly annoying!

I thought it was believable as well. She wanted to push her father away because she felt that he wasn't himself. She was almost scared of him, she knew that this person was not the father she remembered.

She really was a spoiled brat. Constantly crying or about to cry when something wasn't going perfectly. Sorry that your dad basically came back from the dead and life isn't revolving around keeping you happy 24/7. And what kind of mother wouldn't just take the balloon out of her hands when she's being incredibly rude at the dinner table?

Yeah, so clearly I was annoyed by her haha

LOL, I do agree, she was a brat though, saying stuff like that about her dad because your sister is getting some attention, come on, now.

If you haven't already seen it, you guys should SERIOUSLY watch the original version of this movie, BrØdre. It is Danish, but you can watch it with subtitles. I saw the American version first, and didn't mind it, but after seeing the Danish version, I can hardly stomach the American one.

Sooooo much of the subtly of scenes is lost in the American one, as well as some of the meaning behind things. One example is the older daughter's behavior and the events leading up to her "blow up". In the original, she isn't being exceptionally bratty like that, she is just being a regular kid and her Dad snaps on her. It makes you much more sympathetic towards the girls.

The acting is also much better in the Danish version. Watch it. Seriously.
