What would happen to Sam after he confessed?

What would happen to Sam after he confessed to killing Joe Willis? Would he get pardoned for his actions? Would he be tried in Afghanistan? Would it be considered a war crime?

Sorry. I don't really know much about the military or about what happens if you commit a crime in another country.

He would never confess it to the authorities. That's the whole point of the movie. In real life, you sometimes just got to live with your past. I wear uniform too, in some other country. Life for soldiers is not all black and white, anywhere. War is an uncharted territory for all, including us. As much as it'd appear so, we too don't know how to deal with its horrors, and the scars it leaves in its aftermath. A war-hardened soldier is a myth. If I had to continue with Sam's story, I would show him as released from the facility and back with his family, living a broken life till time healed his wounds.

Well said ! As the oldest son having grown up in a military family of several, I was able to relate to the characters in this movie on different levels.

Well, they had a gun to Sam's head and were alternately threatening to either shoot him or cut off Joe's head so it's not what most would consider murder.
It's no choice at all...like Sophie's choice.
I don't think it would be considered a crime. More like another form of torture.

Zooymtoo, I agree. He had no choice. There was nothing he could do, and he probably thought he'd have a chance of getting home, if help come.
