'You're just mad because she'd rather sleep with Uncle Tommy than you!'

What kind of little girl says that to a shell-shocked war veteran? Moreover, what kind of little girl says that?

I wasn't planning on seeing this, anyway, but that moment in the trailer just killed it for me.

------Jesus loves you, but only as a friend.------

reply

Looking forward to the movie, but agree about that cringeworthy line.

reply

I did think that was a little out of character for a little girl to say to her father who she thought was dead.

The secret to a happy marraige remains a secret.

reply

Lame line written by someone FORCING the movie instead of letting it flow.

It would be just as bad as hearing young Luke Skywalker say to Ben Kenobi, Your just mad cause Vader is my father.

The movie suffered from forced story telling. And that happens when it isn't given the time to change or grow.

The girl wouldn't have said that him. It was simply BAD writing.

Good comparison with Star Wars references, but yet no, it is not "BAD writing". Though I love Star Wars, let's watch those movies again shall we? Tell us Brothers has bad writing. lol.

reply

The girl was angry at her father and was being a brat, but don't let that stop you from seeing the film. Talk about an awkward moment at the dinner table. lol

reply

I've already seen it. The entire movie is in the trailer.

I don't know of any kid that young who would even know what that line MEANS, let alone SAY it. Unless I'm seriously out of touch these days... She seemed too young, to me and my wife, anyhow..

It kinda ruined the whole movie for me, which is sad. It had to be there because the whole story hinged on it. They needed to think it through a little better.

reply

I'm just shocked that she's saying that how old is she?

ville valo is sexy.jake epstein is good looking. and cassie steele is hot.

reply

The line said in the trailer is in a different scene in the film, and when you see it, you'll understand.

reply

Too bad the movie sucked horribly.

reply

I hated this movie. What a crock on so many levels. I gave it a one...it would have been a zero if it were one of the choices.

reply

I'm looking forward to seeing this movie, but yeah... that line makes me cringe and the main flaw to that trailer. I also can't picture that coming out of any child her age's mouth. Perhaps it will make more sense when I watch the movie... I won't know that for another week, though.

reply

I agreed at first then I though maybe she meant literally just sleep. Makes sense for a young girl to say that. I think maybe we as adults automatically translate that into the slang that we know it as. What if she meant it in a literal way? That's something she would know, though saying it to her father still a little mean but personally helps me a bit.

"No fear. No distractions. The ability to let that which does not matter truly slide."

reply

She meant it literally, so it makes sense.

reply

She didn't mean it literally. She says in the movie "your just mad because she'd rather sleep with uncle tommy than your, mom and uncle tommy have sex all the time"

reply

Two of us backed up that scene three times, and we still couldn't understand what she said. Now that I understand, I agree, a kid wouldn't say that.

reply

Except you overlooked what she says 2 SECONDS IMMEDIATELY AFTER, where she directly references sex.

reply

I think it would have been more believable for her to say that if she was a teenager. But the girl looked like she was eight and that statement seemed too mature coming out of her mouth. Maybe if she said, "You're just mad because she'd rather be with Uncle Tommy than you!" it might have been more plausible.

It's entirely possible that she had picked that particular line (or the idea of it) up from hearing other people talking about it. Who's to say that her drunk, belligerent grandfather wasn't yelling at her uncle about it? Or that Portman and Gyllenhaal hadn't dicussed it at some point, not knowing she was listening? What if she had even made the connection from Maguire's own obsession with the topic, and, knowing it would make him upset, used it to hurt him when he was "hurting" her feelings? There are too many simple reasons why people should avoid jumping to conclusions with this movie. Watch it, then state your opinions from there.

reply

Her father wasn't hurting her feelings - Uncle Tommy was - Isabel was jealous of the woman Tommy bought to dinner - he'd taken over the father role for her - and Isabel wanted no woman other than her mother in his life. The only way she could have picked that line would have been hearing adults speaking about it. Maybe they cut a scene of her seeing her mother and Uncle Tommy kiss and then missing see him getting up and quickly leaving.

reply

^^This. I thought that that scene would evoke something out of the viewers. I had literally just seen the movie and am still blown away by it. I agree with dandanger - and let me just add that Isabel was me when I was a child. Don't be hypocrites and say that you've never been a brat when you were a kid. I had someone I adored and wanted to be in my life more than the ones who were already in it. That may be *beep* up but consider the trauma that these kids have gone through - were going through (probably will forever go through) - and then tell me that Isabel didn't have the right to say what she said. Yes, it was horrible and uncalled for but kids pretty much say the truth because they don't know anything else.

Also, can I just say that Jake's acting in that scene was just amazing? You can see him looking at Isabel and KNOWING that something was about to go down. Tommy was Isabel and he understood what she's going through and he knew that she was about to explode. I dunno what it is about that moment but it was just so powerful. I guess non-verbal moments always are.

reply

"Jake's acting scene was amazing"? Are you friggin' kidding me?! It was awful! When the kid blurted out that lie he just looked at his brother like a retard with a smirk on his face. In real life he would've been horrified and shocked. He would've yelled at that girl for lying and vehemently denied the lie. You don't just sit there and look guilty in a case like that when you're innocent. Ditto for Natalie Portman.

reply

Yeah, except you overlook the fact a child as young as her doesn't realistically think like that, especially from the way she had been raised. And no, I'm no hypocrite when I say I didn't have the mindset to speak the way she did, referencing sex. Her lashing out is realistic, but not the lines she says.

reply

What a great film. Anyway...

I'm pretty sure if you look closely, the actress says *beep* but it was overdubbed to "sleep with".

reply

Coming up with excuses for a child as young as her to even think this way, having such a mentality. And that does not even absolve her using language like an adult. Stop thinking little girls think this elaborately.

reply

yea that line made me laugh, but maybe she meant "sleep" literally?

reply

I'm just imagining this Vet. coming home, probably really happy to be with his family and hearing his daughter say that to him. That's really messed up.

reply

The trailer looks intense. I`d see it even though what the little girl says.

reply

[deleted]

Oh I still plan on seeing it, I'm just imagining a kid actually saying that to their father.

reply

I said worse as a child. I once told a friend that his father abandoned the family because of him just because I was angry at the time. Kids aren't very sensitive.

reply

I have done my share of being hurtful as a child. I once told my brother that a bunch of hobos left him on the door step. I even helped him pack to look for his hobo family and walked him all the way down the street.

But I really believe all children have some degree of feelings and can tell when another person is hurting, like how her father is. I mean, look at the guy! He looks like he is more dead than alive.
