Why did Sam have to take a taxi home?

I know this isn't very relevant, but, Why did Sam Jackson, such a dedicated hero, have to take a taxi home? I mean, all of Jessica Biel's family were at the airport. Also, Presley's character had to take a taxi back to re-enlist.

Any ideas?

It was the writer's way of focusing attention on the psych problems rather than the homecoming.

That and the writer simply didn't think about reality. I looked at my wife when I saw the taxi scene and told her I better never come home in a taxi from deployment. Doesn't his wife care about him enough to pick him up from the unit?

Not to mention that he was then cooking at a party where he didn't seem to know anyone just a few hours later.

I don't know about you, but if I had been away for that long I wouldn't want to share my time with my family with anyone else - at least not for the first few days.

It turns out North Korea and Iran are not like Doctor Octopus and Magneto at all...

I was taken aback by that too...surprising the family didn't pick him up...if you're close enough for a taxi...? But I'm sure that that happens more times than we'd care to know about, just maybe not in the context it was shown in the movie.

One time on leave I walked home from the airport. Just needed some time to take being home in by myself I guess. A lot of people stopped to offer a ride, but I just thanked them and kept walking. Eventually I relented and accepted a ride the rest of the way. A duffle bag does get heavy after a couple of miles. Everyone has their way of starting to re-adjust I guess.

I remember Sam Jackson saying "I wanted to surprise you" to his wife as he got out of the cab when she asked why didn't you let us know you were coming?
