Aspect Ratio Confusions
[Please keep in mind that I've only got the Canadian version, and have never seen the USA DVD release.]
Long story short, I had heard some good things about this movie, found it in a store for a good price, bought it, took it home... and, as with most movies I get, I filed it away. Today (May 18), however, is a holiday in Canada (Victoria Day - dunno what that means, other than what I need to know... namely, it's a holiday so the busses are slow, the stores are closed, and I'll be working by myself), so most people get the day off, and if you have a good job you probably booked off Friday the 15th as well, so you could have a 4-day weekend.
However, security guards are required at most sites 24/7. So I got to lounge around and watch movies at work for 12 hours (earning 2.5 times my usual "hourly wage").
ANYWAY, I was looking for stuff to watch, and came across Vice. But this was the first time I had noticed that it said on the "carboard cover" (that contained all the U.S. info) that this movie was FULL SCREEN! I tore the plastic Canadian-information-having DVD case out and it said the same thing. It even explained that on the (Canadian) box, about how the movie was SHOT in full frame, so they were actually CONSERVING the director's wants by releasing the movie 1.33:1.
But then I looked on imdb, and it said the movie was 2.35:1, no other editions released. So I said to myself (it can get lonely at 3am in a huge, ancient, concrete structure, so I was actually talking to myself out loud), "Let's just test this." Popped it in the machine, it was definitely 2.35:1.
So I guess my point is, unless you hear/know otherwise, no matter what the box says, the DVD is LBX. And if you *DO* happen to find a "Vice" DVD with a 1.33:1 ratio, please let us know.
Oh, and it's almost June, and I'm looking outside the window at frickin SNOW! When will this global warming EVER hurry up and kick in?!?!?!
