Was Chuck gay???

I saw the movie today with my mom and it was good, but one thing that really disturb my mind was this; Chuck's realtionship with Lem in the movie. Was he a homosexual? Because in the film, I kinda spot some hints that he may be or not. And in the first part where Lem and Chuck first met, when Lem told him his name, Chuck was like "Either your name is Lem or you're trying to mate with me." It was....how do I put this? Well...that kinda caught me off guard during the first half of the movie, but then when it got further at the scene where Chuck tries to teach Lem how to woo Neera with his tips on how to get a girl, he ALMOST try to kiss him! I thought "WTF?! O_o" It was hilarious, but really disturbing to put in an animated feature to me.

I was kinda afraid for something like that to happen because last night I had a dream that Chuck and Lem were having....ahem! S-E-X! And that was a night before the movie came out one day ago. Don't ask me why, but I had a feeling right after that near kissing part from the movie, I sense that people are gonna be shipping Chuck/Lem as a couple later on further if Planet 51 gets enough fanfics and fanarts of them together as a mis-match. I'm not a big fan of slash, but for some reason, I can see these two working out together in a homo sorta funny-bone tickling kind of way.

I couldn't listen to another love song ever again without thinking of these two in a gay relationship and hearing Taylor Swift's song You Belong With Me and Leona Lewis' Bleeding Love song has told my head enough nasty thoughts on them! XDD

Someone dreaming about two guys having sex together is not what I would consider to be a proof that THESE two guys are gay. I suppose you are a girl and that the movie scene just 'exite' your sexual desire, like 'thinking' about two lesbians can excite many hetero guys... even if the two girls are not lesbians at all, in reality. It is called a phantasm and phantasm are strong in bending the perceived reality.

Someone awaking herself to her sexuality, openly, without taboo, is not necessary immature.

reply

I am a girl yeah, but this doesn't make me immature. I was just a little bit suprised how they could try to get away with this in an animated movie. How many cartoon characters do you know that try to kiss someone as opposite to the same sex?

reply

lol, the username says it all. Doubly unfortunately, I will never watch this movie to find out if you were onto something.

Opposite to the same sex?...Sooo..of the opposite sex? Lol...Anyways, I'm guessing your question was 'how many cartoon characters try to kiss someone of the same sex?' The answer is: quite a few.

Bugs Bunny kisses Elmer Fudd a lot and even dresses as a woman when he does it, Roger Rabbit kissed his friend(forget the character's name...played by Bob Hoskins) and at the end of the movie Hoskins kissed him back, Bugs Bunny kissed Michael Jordan in Space Jam...

These were all geared toward kids, but didn't necessarily imply a homosexual relationship...it's just a cartoon thing to have two guys do that because it tends to be awkward, and therefore funny.

Someone beats me on examples.

In THIS movie, they didn't kiss, though. Your perception is that they did, or would have, but that is my point: on one side, there is the reality, on the other side, is your pre-disposition to see things, and the final result is a shaky conclusion you make. It happened to every one of us, there is nothing wrong with that, but the problem is in the conclusion we draw, under these circumstances.

Who did never experience a moment where we were sure the other was in love with us, while it was, for the other, just a smile, just a simple simple, nothing more. But none the less, we made a fool of ourself.

Predisposition to see things is somehow dangerous in that it bents the reality in your mind. Here, really, the characters did not kiss each other. What more you want to see is up to you, and if it was real, oh god, ... if only all these girls would have been really in love with me...

Well, Bugs Bunny leaps immediately to mind...

I don't think he was gay. If anything he seems more of a homo-phobe ("that was a 'man-hug' very popular on my planet.") At the end, Lem gives him a hug of more a "parental" kind, and it didn't bother Chuck until he stopped & thought about it. When they almost kissed, Chuck was demonstrating putting moves on a lady. (but I'm still trying to figure the "mate with me" line you mentioned... Maybe the writers were just trying to infer the problems with communication at that point.... dunno..) :-P But I think Chuck was just covering up a lot of insecurities throughout the movie.

"But I think Chuck was just covering up a lot of insecurities throughout the movie."

How is all of that homophobic?

reply

Yeah explain why cause I don't get that either.

reply

The "mate with me" sentence was just a joke by the producers in my opinion. They had trouble communicating, so Chuck didn't know, what the alien was up to. It's just the same stupid question like asking him, if he was ugly or towards the end, where Chuck asks Lem, if he and the lady alien where brother and sister. He simply was unsure, how the people or on that alien planet - so surely he had to find out, if they mate male and male and family-oriented and that kind.

reply

haha, I don't know if he was gay. What really shocked me was when his friend walks in on their embrace and tells him to use the cork. That was definitely an anal sex joke in the middle of a kids movie. I'm surprised they got away with that one.

reply

Yeah same here. I find that part really disturbing in the most hilarious ways. I also kinda figure out that the cork thing was more like a condom for them to use on their own home planet because...well....it's too uncomfortable for me to say but the aliens DO need to find a way to protect theirselves if they are to mate with their lovers lol!

The cork was nothing to do with condoms. Lem's friend gives him the cork to protect against anal-probing. He says that it is the alien's (meaning humans) favourite form of research. It's just a parody on so many of our alien films or alien-abduction stories involving people being anal-probed.

Im guessing theres a lot of kids on this board or just a lot of dumb people?

How you can get that character or THOSE characters as gay is your own little personal fantasy and the fact that you had a dream about them having sex before the movie even came out just shows its something youre trying to play off as the creators fault and not yours for twisting things to make them fit your perspective.

Theyre not gay, lem is going after the girl, Chuck is trying to show lem how to get the girl, in Hitch the fat guy kissed will and I dont think anyone thought it was gay it was COMEDY.

reply

Chuck was a liiiittle bit homophobic. I think he was in denial. ;)

reply

A little? Try a lot lolz!

I think it was just meant to be funny. It reminded me of the scene in Independence Day where the buddy is demonstrating to the black pilot how he should propose to his girlfriend. They are in the locker room, and he goes down on one knee holding the ring box, and then someone sees them and backs off embarrassed.

I was kind of wondering, though, if they were afraid it looked sexual, or if they were afraid it looked like the "alien" was going to eat Lem, which was one of the planet's natives' fears.

First of all: OMG REALLY?!
Now, I guess you could see some of the stuff Chuck says/does as 'doth protests too much' (specially the hug at the end, when the alien girl looked at him like "¿...?"), but besides this being a kid movie, I don't really think it would, er, work. Considering different species and all. If you want to see subtext in animation, though, I would kindly direct you to "Road to El Dorado". That has to be seen to be believed.

reply

No, just stupid.
