'The Rock' seems to be going the Eddie Murphy route

I'm surprised to see "The Rock" making yet another "kiddie" movie. And, I watched some of Eddie Murphy's early material on YouTube and you couldn't bring your kids to any of his early shows! I guess they're finding a niche that works for them.

The Rock's always been more geared towards family fare. Most of his movies never exceed PG-13. Be Cool and Doom are the only ones I can think of (the latter being R just for gratuity's sake). He has a gentle giant attitude, so it works better in family movies than in the head-busting roles he's usually typecast into.

I think he's wasting his youth and physique on kiddy movies. This is the time for him to make exciting action/adventure movies. It's good to mix it up, but he seems to have made a pledge to never do another action movie again. I can understand that he doesn't want to be typecasted into just a big musclehead action star, but is getting typecasted into a children's-teeny bopper movie star any better?

he needs to do more serious roles

I love the guy but the Rock is one of those actors that can't act but can fill seats in the movie theater.

I wouldn't say he's been typecast at all, OR that he's only starring in kiddie films. His last five films (not including Planet 51) are:

Race to Witch Mountain
Get Smart
The Game Plan
Reno 911!: Miami
Gridiron Gang

Two "family" movies, two comedies and a drama. He has a varied career, people are just deciding to base their opinions on what they want to.

Last Seen:
New Moon (2009) - 5/10
Twilight (2008) - 4.75/10

Hmm, I didn't say he only makes kiddie movies. But consider that Van Damme and Segal never made a comedy or kid's movies in their life. Course, Rock isn't a pure action movie actor, but the previously mentioned actors never felt the need to include a children's movie in their filmography. I'm not even critiquing Rock's choice of movies he stars in, but you have to admit, it may be hard for him to do movies like "The Rundown" in the future, which I thought was entertaining.

Drama for him? Interesting in that he could possibly pull it off.

Trust me, the women who watch his movies are NOT watching it for his acting abilities!

Segal never made a comedy? All those movies were supposed to be serious?!

(sorry, I just couldn't resist.)

There's nothing wrong with Mr. Johnson walking that path, it ain't stand-up.

Ehhh... Personally I think its a failed attempt at keeping an acting career. I myself didn't enjoy his acting in anything except Get Smart, which was very funny. And I have noticed that, despite I haven't heard anything about his wrestling career in almost literally a decade, he ALWAYS has his signature on any movie hes in as "The Rock" aka his wrestling stage name. We've seen it before, John Ceena, Stone Cold, The Rock, all trying to branch out into Show Biz from WWF. So far I don't think any except the rock have tried so desperately to reach it.

I don't see anything wrong with him developing his acting career. Personally I've only seen him wrestle in the WWE once, and I'm fan of that form of entertainment. Out of the three you mentioned he's the most diverse in his acting skill.

Oh no doubt. I would actually like to see if he could be good in a drama. And I take it back that he would lose his action star cred after doing so many kiddie movies. He seems to be pretty formidable in the latest in the Fast/Furious series.

why a drama ?

Thank God these days are over with, The Rock is back on fire again living up to the action star potential he had back in the early 00's!

I have an unbelievably long ignore list.

If Stallone can make action movies while pushing 70, anybody can.

What was wrong with him making kids films? He never was an actor to begin with, he was an athlete, and just so happened to be very good at it when he was in the WWF. He has kids, did it more for them than anything.

Anyway, nice to see him fulfiling his potential now, probably the most hard working actor in hollywood now and the only 'real' action star around in the same mould as Stallone and Arnie.

I watched Die Hard 5 the other day and it's sad to see the past great action stars still doing films like that at their age.
