Overlooked and underrated. A moving and intelligent Christmas movie.

I absolutely love this film. It's not merely because it tells a story that is central to my beliefs, but because it tells it so well. The Nativity Story is a spiritually edifying film with a keen sense of historical insight, emotional authenticity, and scriptural accuracy. Indeed the only minor change I noted was that the three wise men arrive the night of Christ's birth, as per tradition, not some time later as recorded in holy writ; otherwise the film sticks closely to the Bible. One might ask how a film that stretches into ninety minutes a story that other films (Ben Hur, The Testaments, The Lamb of God) condensed into four or five does so without getting boring. The answer, of course, is in the details. By examining what life in Nazareth would be like for a pregnant unwed teenager claiming that her son's father was God, by chronicling the hopes of the shepherds and wise men, by giving historical insight into Herod's corruption, and by portraying the perils and travails of the long journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, the film keeps our interest and broadens our insight. It is also quite moving, as Mary and Joseph go from nervous near-strangers to inseparable husband and wife through persecution, tender service to one another, and the daunting task of raising the Messiah. This is a well-written, well-acted, testimony-building film with gorgeous music and lovely cinematography. I've rarely had such a spiritual experience at the movies.

I am really not a churchy person on any level, but I do think this is one of my favorite holiday films, because it actually isn't a film crammed with CGI nonsense. The little additions to the story, seem to fit and humanize, characters who are often glorified as demigods.

I think the beginning drags a little bit, but the score is phenomenal, and love how it kind of dances around the theme to Silent Night near the climax of the film.

Yeah, me too. The music at the end gives me goose bumps

It's almost that time again to pull this gem off my DVD shelf and watch it as part of my Christmas prep and celebration. What a perfect movie for that task.

I agree. Some other Nativity movies tell the story as some kind of a fairy tale, but this presents it portraying real people in a real cultural and historical context. Even if you interpret some of the events as symbolic rather than actual, they fit in well.

Keisha's forced accent kind of weirds me out, but besides that, I really like this movie. I think it's a great portrayal of the humanity of Mary and Joseph. I also think they do a really good job of showing the turmoil, suffering, social disgrace, etc. that pervades the lives of the Holy Family and their community. It's just beautiful- a truly moving film version of the Nativity of Our Lord.

I didn't like the girl who played Mary, but otherwise I loved the film. She was kind of cold towards Joseph, and since God picked her as the woman to carry the Son of God, I don't think she would've scorned Joseph at the betrothal, or question the ancient tradition of arranged marriages. She does kind of warm on me over time, but the film does an excellent job of humanizing these beloved people!
