Monkey Hung itself?

This lady in the film is talking about how her sister (I think) met Mr Jones. She says that her sister has a monkey but the monkey hung itself....and she needed a new monkey and Mr. Jones had one for sale.

Does this sound strange only to me? Who needs a monkey and since when do monkies hang themselves? Very confused. Any light on the issue or am I jsut crazy?

I think your talking about the relative of Edith Cordell. I would imagine that Edith was her aunt and not a sister. Edith would be over 100 years old at this time, so I'm guessing the older woman interviewed would be a neice.
Anyway, small monkeys as pets go through spurts of popularity. Some people think that they remind them of children. At one point Jim Jones sold small monkeys as house pets. As for it 'hanging itself', I have no idea how it happened. It was probably just an accident. I'm not sure what's confusing you about this. Maybe you never heard of monkeys as domesticated pets?

(ps-they really aren't very good pets, they can get vicious and destroy your house if they feel neglected!)

Monkeys do not make good pets. They poop everywhere, bite, scratch, destroy things and sometimes carry diseases. Nonetheless, people sometimes have monkeys as pets.

Because of their behavioral problems, pet monkeys are often tethered to posts, cages or trees. Sometimes the lead gets wrapped around their necks and they try to jump to another perch and are hung.

I don't think anyone was implying a monkey hung itself on purpose.

Could have simply got tangled in the window blind strings. They are very hyper.

That sounded suspicious. A monkey hung itself & Jones happened to be selling two them? That's fishy.
