I think it's a safe bet the dog got eaten. While this goes against a lot of mainstream family films, I think it showed a lot of realism by demonstrating that Crusoe was still a wild animal. I think the parts where he tried to harm Angus also differentiated it from ET or Iron Giant because it shows the monster reacting in its instinctive wild nature as opposed to a domesticated animal like a dog. A risk by the filmmakers that made it more unique in my eyes.

No. The trailer clearly shows Crusoe roaring & Churchill running off whimpering. Why the scene wasn't included in the final cut of the movie is a mystery.

Actually the answer then is Yes, he ate the dog. That's what the sudden silence infers. They just didn't want to actually show it because it was a kids movie. It doesn't matter what was in the preview, only what made it into the film. Obviously they considered that possibility but then cut it out because it would seem too comic and opted for the darker and more realistic possibility.
