Very Disturbing ***Spoilers***

This was a very disturbing movie, at least it disturbed me. Three days after watching I'm still unsettled by it.

Here's the spoiler:
It's a movie about a suicide, from the perspective of the suicide, demonstrating that suicide is the only logical answer from his perspective, and it ends in the act of suicide. That's dark.

More spoilers:
While the extended fantasy that comprises most of the movie has wonderful moments of hope, once the viewer realizes that's all fantasy, there's not a strain of hope anywhere to be found. It's just abject desperation and a resort to the last conscious act.

Perhaps it's a lack of imagination on my part, but I can't think of another movie that adopts the suicide's perspective and sees it through to the end without an escape clause anywhere. Sure there are plenty of dark comedies, ironic larks and heavy dramas that involve suicide, but this is just a movie without hope.

That doesn't make it a bad movie; certainly the symbolism is rich throughout. It holds together from beginning to end once the viewer understands what is fantasy and what is reality in the film. Christian Slater disappears into his role, even if some of the other performances are a bit clunky.

But at the end of the day, I may be sorry I watched this. I don't think I've ever said that about a well-made movie before.

...This comment is really more of a review than a comment, but it makes no sense without the spoilers, so I put it here...

In the extras they showed alternate endings, but never once thought of killing the abusers. Wtf.
Spoiler from me. Pisses me off. I want to go punch a guy in a suit now.
