the early days of psychotherapy.

I watched this film with the intention of learning more about Nietzsche. I don't think this film did that for me, but I did find it interesting to see the beginnings of psychoanalysis.

Psychotherapy has progressed far from the early days of psychoanalysis. Freud is often portrayed in films/TV (and even by college professors) as a comical character nowadays, despite his historical fame. But he was portrayed favorably here, and seemed to be the most grounded of his peers.

I started watching this film soon after watching a few episodes of the HBO series In Treatment, and I was struck by one similarity. They both involved a therapist seeing his own therapist. This practice was strongly encouraged by Freud's school of psychoanalysis, and is apparently still practiced today.

Except for Freud himself, of course, who didn't consider anyone else "qualified" enough to analyze him (so he analyzed himself!).
