I can only assume he'd be more angry with the fact that many of the people that see this movie will never read a single page from one of his papers. Instead they'll read a book which this movie is based on and leave it at that.

I am a philosophy teacher, and I absolutely love Nietzsche's philosophy. And I can assure you that the movie was a piece of fast-food crap. It's disputable if it even had 4minutes of Nietzsche's philosophy inside.

Go read Irvin's book, I loved it.

When was it released? I have never heard of this movie. I have seen Armand Assante in a lot of things, and he's been a fine, understated performer. He doesn't play things over-the-top usually. Many times, he's in the strong and fairly stoic roles. He also studies exclusively with an acting coach that I studied with for a 4-week session. He even takes this coach on set with him, so he's always working on his craft. I hope this movie is not as bad as you proclaim.

I played in the film as a supernumerary. It is not Sam that had looked at it further because he is not ready,, but I think that he will be much interesting.

Maybe we can consider Assante as an "Hollywoodian Ubermensch" (what's the english? Overhuman?)...

Maybe they could have choosen Vandamme or Stallone, lol...

reply

Overman.

mensche=man

I thought Assante was great. I have no idea what Nietzsche was like in real life, but fiction or not, Assante's acting was brilliant. How often do we get the whole truth about historical characters anyway?

reply

"Overman" is too literal, it would be closer to say "superman" without thinking about the comic character, just the idea of such an individual. Someone far above the rest. A ruler, a power.

reply

Agreed. What a horrible performance that was. He's not bad at acting, but he just wasn't good enough for this very demanding part.

reply

Think they probably should have given this role to Bob Dylan......

reply

Ya think? Actually, that would have been a very good choice!

I'm a first class Nietzsche fan, but I liked Assante's personification. At first I thought it was odd, of course, but it grew into me, because he gives I think, a different vision of what is usually expected of Friedrich. I thought it was very human (all too human) and even tender.
