Monk and Jesse's affair

Okay so I am hoping people out here can help me with this. I just saw the movie and was shocked that she didn't go away with the monk. They seemed as if they had a connection and that it would be awesome for them to get together.

Now someone told me that the reason behind her not leaving with him, is because he was a tool to help her get over what she was dealing with. Same for him. The affair with her was like a way to come back into society....instead of running away from it.

I have no idea if that is the correct message or not. Any help please? If that was the correct message then I will still be sad they didn't get together.

You might enjoy reading the book to draw your own conclusion. I liked the book, but I missed seeing the movie so I don't know if they followed the book or not. I think they did.

I don't know, I think I was more disturbed that he took her back after that.

I just watched this movie. I don't usually care for 'chick flicks'. It was an okay film with an unsuprising ending. I would have preferred to see Thomas re-commit to his religious vocation just as Jessie recommited to her marriage, but I suppose that would have been even more difficult for him since everyone in the town knew about his affair. She went back to her world in which only her family knew. It seems Thomas really wasn't running toward something as he told Jessie, but away from his grief at the loss of his pregnant wife and was ready to go back into the world. He apparently didn't really have a vocation.
