It's odd that they included Welcome to the Dollhouse, which I wouldn't consider a true gay movie, and excluded Beautiful Thing, probably one of the most important gay films of the 90s. Dollhouse had the skinny little boy pal who was maybe gay, but he had such a small part.

And what about Showgirls?! ;-)

reply

Fabulous! as Celluloid Closet only covers USA queer cinema, the first mainly USA independent queer cinema, the last, mainly Hollywood queer cinema, coz thats were the celluloid closet was. Thats way many, including Beautiful Thing, strong and groundbreaking European and Asian queer films are not mentioned.

reply

Welcome to the Dollhouse was mentioned because Heather Matarazzo talks about her character in the movie being called gay, and at such a young age she didn't know what being gay meant. When she finally found out she was, she was so happy that she now knew who she was.

reply

They didn't put Velvet Goldmine in it?!

Academy Awards = the Creme de la Creme of Bull Sh*t

reply

I'm surprised Edge of Seventeen was not included. It is my favourite gay coming of age film, set in the 80s with a John Hughs feel.
