Last weeks episode (Smilidon)

Does anyone else agree is was a bit stupid our intrepid time traveller and big cat expert splitting up - and with no weapons for self defense either.

If your hunting an ancestor of a cat (and an efficient killer too), you wont exactly want to end up as a starter - epsecially if there is no other food to go around...

Nigel is so hapless when he starts off trying to get a new species. Did you see the one where he went back to find those gliding dinosaur type thingy's, and to catch them he took off his jacket and tried to sneak up on them and catch them with it? Hilarious!

reply

You would think he would use tranquiliser darts more often - although due to the hap-hazard methods used, he'll probably end up shooting himself...

As for the the last weekends one (giant dragonflys) - and where he gets nobbled by a scorpian. Two problems with that :

A) Surely the poison would have been a lot more potent than the modern level - after all if, your hunting large animals, you would need a lot of poison to bring the 'meal' down.
B) Its it rather risky asking a vet to diagnose a human medical problem ?

Does anyone else see the irony in a bunch of people arguing over the realism in a programme, in which the premise is capturing extinct animals using time travel?

reply

Oh yes... We just like finding fault in the program from a technical aspect. The behaviour & look of the animals themselves, cant really be faulted per se, but thats mainly because that side of things is a mixture of conjecture and extrapolations based on near-ish relatives.

On the problem of the scorpion...

1) In the scorpion world, it tends to be that the larger the Scorpion the weaker the poison, with the exception of only one case. The main reason for this is because of the claws. the smaller the scorpion the less powerful claws and hence needs a more potent sting. The largest scorpion today has a sting which has been compared to a weak bee sting.

2) The vet was probably a good idea as she would know what kind of poison the scorpion would have used. Also the vet has probably been sting, bit, kicked and lashed by animals far more times than any other doctor and would probably know better, especially if their other opportunity was the UK National Health Service.

Though I like this story some of the lengths he goes too do seem a little wierd and unnecessary, but he's got an hour of television to fill up, so he has to come up with some way. Its also a good way to show us how the creatures might have behaved. I like this season, I think it could have been better but it reactivated my interest for the prehistoric. And after each episode I do like to my own research.

reply

Fair enough :)

I do agree that a fair bit of his actions do seem to be pointless, but at least he eventually gets results...

reply

The giant bug episode was good, but why would Nigel bother rescuing creatures that can't breath this kind of air.

reply

If you bite it and you die, it's poisonous. If it bites you (or stings you) and you die, it's venomous. Scorpions are not poisonous, they are venomous.
