Way earlier than that, it was a quip in a sketch by "Firesign Theater", a comedy group composed of L.A. DJs who put out a few comedy LPs in the late '60s: "Waiting for the Electrician or Someone Like Him", The Lennon/Marx album (featuring John Lennon and Groucho Marx on the cover), "Hand Me the Pliers, Don't Crush That Dwarf", "How Can You Be in Two Places at Once When You're Not Anwhere at all. They were a cult classic on college campuses well into the '70s and I once heard the Monty Pythons cite them as an inspiration. And they are a kind of American brand of a similar humor.
