Why does Eddie bring up the fact he is Jewish a lot??

I have seen about 10 episodes NOT in order and he has referred to himself as the "Tall Jew" is that suppose to be funny?? And it was hard for me to get used to Brad Garret speaking normal after watching
"Everyone Loves Raymond" Brad was my very FAV as Robby.
