It seems to me that he played a character a bit like this in
'A League of Their Own'. Getting a team together...when the original team can't play anymore. Granted it's a bit different...men going off to war and women replacing them versus losing the entire team and coaching staff in a plane crash. But, he still had to take the blame...and didn't really get any credit.
