Could be the worst ending in movie history

I have seen plenty of movies but this movie was definately one of the worst movies I have seen. The acting sucked, the story was stereotypical for a feel good sports movie, but the ending had to be the worst endings in movie history. They build the whole movie up by showing the effort of the Marshall coaches to rebuild the team and showing how involved the comunity was into Marshalls football program. And after hours of this unorginal dragged on nonsense Marshall barely wins an exciting game, which would have been a decent ending to a bad movie. But right after the game the narrator explains that marshal loses their next game by 60 to a pretty bad team and ends up with the least wins in the ncaa for the decade. Both coaches leave Marshall and the narrator moves.

That has to be one of the most ilinformed posts ever on this board.

You do know this is a true story don't you?

Plus based on your post, you must of left the movie before it was over.

no. the movie was SO BORING.
there was no need for this story to be adapted to film.
Last time I checked, movies were supposed to entertain.

reply

Exactly soccer pro, I know it was a true story, but McG messed it up. And the ending regargless of its factuality ruined the most important part of any story, the climax. As the climax was how Marshal won the big game in a dramatic fashion. But the ending contradicted the points of the movie as the win did not matter as in the ending they lost the next game by sixty, and continued to haves the most losses of any team in the ncaa for the decade, the coaches dedication and hopes to rebuild the team was another theme but once again it was ruined in the end that both coaches soonly quit. The theme of the towns support of the team is ruined by the ending when they show that the narrator moved from the town because of the bad memories it possesed. As I stated earlier I know this movie was based on a true story, but Mcg turned into a clished plot conflicting horibbly acted mess.

reply

OK folks......missing the point here. The story is about grieving and getting back to the daily business of life. Winning "one" game provided enough hope and spark to set the entire town on a path to recovery. Down that path lied MANY championships, bowl wins, records, and succesful NFL carreers.

Granted this movie did not do the story justice but jeeezz......you cannot sit passively and wait for a movie to spell it out for you. You gotta use some empathy and TRY to understand character or plot motivation.

A little peace? Why be so modest? How about eternal peace? The Lion in Winter

and after the most losses in the decade they turned it around and won more games than anyone in the 90s. The ending was not the win at Xavier, the ending was the narrating of how the team had went from most losses in the 70s to become the most winning program of the 90s. The win at Xavier shows a small bright spot of hope that although you will take your lumps, you can eventually make things better

You completely missed the whole point of the movie. The movie wasnt supposed to be they win the Xavier football game then become an instant national championship power because that is impossible. The story is about loss and perseverance. Yes you can be down, yes you can lose everything but get back up on your feet and try the best you can. You will take your lumps by doing so because there is no easy cure but in time things will get better. Its a metaphor for life. Yes things can get bad, yes you are going to take your lumps but by getting up and trying even knowing it isnt going to be easy and you will take your lumps, things will eventually work out. I can tell you missed that point

reply

I 100% agree. OP, if you seriously think this movie was just about football, then you don't know how to watch a movie at all. I for one liked the end, because everyone expected some fairytale ending. But there wasn't one, not for a while at least, because this is real life. Sometimes things do not happen the way we want them too, so we have to try and get the most out of not succeeding. Nobody can go from nothing to winning a championship in one season, as much as I would like to believe it could happen. And as much as I like underdog stories where the protagonists always end up winning, they are not very believable. It's about the journey, not the destination, as they say. And all you seem to care about is the scoreboard, which means this film's meaning is completely lost on you.

I have to give credit to bialy33, you've actually made the worst post in IMDB's 20 year history.
How come you're not upset with RUDY for playing with the facts?

That's right, you a wanna be Gene Siskel who wouldn't know a good movie if it slapped you in the face and gave you the finger. I'm willing to bet you hated the ending of the original Bad News Bears movie.

Give the filmamkers creidt, they were brutally honest on how the win was just a small step, but there were loses to follow, just like life.

Fans will always love the "underdog" like Marshall (something you seemed to have missed), why do you think the Chicago Cubs have such a rapid fanbase?

Seeing all the things you missed in this movie, makes two things clear. A: You went into the theater already determined to hate the movie, and B: You've missed so much, that I'm willing to bet you' miss the water if you jumped off the Titantic!

I leave Symbols to the Symbol minded

reply

It's a MOVIE. The Rudy quote is right on. I bought into the emotions of that season. did not like the girlfriend part of the dead player, but it was minor and they needed a narrator at the end, I guess.

reply

Did you watch the entire movie with blindfolds on and your fingers in your ears? Talk about not getting it.

reply

Forget the ending. It is the worst beginnings to a DVD I have seen. It is a west virginia promotional advertisement/chamber of commerce type ad.

reply

Eghhh...I can see what you mean, having a W. Va. promo spot at the beginning of the movie is kind of weird, but W.Va. IS a beautiful atate and I doubt they have lots of revenue flow like CA does...I'm sure every little bit helps them out in some way.

reply

There is nothing wrong with a promotional advertisment for West Virginia. Its not like it going to hurt your eyes to see our beautful mountains, white water rapids, forests, Seneca Rocks, New River Gorge, etc.

Besides this was an agreement when WV helped pay for 2 more weeks of production so more of the movie scenes took place at Marshall University.

Silly posts from silly people. The entire gist of the movie is that Marshall, which today, boasts a pretty decent football team wouldn't have had any at all without the dedication of a couple of the players that were not on the plane. I remember the Marshall crash and the impossibility of the football being able to recover but it did and today it opens doors for many a young man. I wish some of you nitwits would actually do a little research before making fools of yourselves.

"We Are Marshall isnt at all different from Good Luck Chuck, Noribit, National treasure 2 etc"

How bout this, ass hole. You hop your ass on a plane, drive it into the ground, and we all promise to see that Hollywood makes a decent story out of your death. You know, one that is entertaining.

Prick.

reply

I meant that We Are Marshall was the same in terms of quality. Just because We Are Marshall was a true story does not mean it was a good movie. Its kinda like most of the crap on the lifetime network.

reply

if it was so bad it sure is taking a lot of your time up. Most people with a IQ higher then a hat size would not waste not one more second of their time on something they did not like. If I don't like something I sure am not going back and forth with people and starting whole topics about it unless I get some type of rush being a negative jerk and want other people to be as miserable as you are. A bunch of young people were killed and this is their story. Instead of just watching it and being happy with the happy ending you are miserable. What kind of person of person does that, Not happy one, that is for sure. We should just leave you alone in some corner to wallow away in your misery and wait until the movie about when the whole US Figure Skating team was wiped out in a plane crash so you can complain about that movie too.

reply

Marbleann, firstoff critizing my personality and my time management skills does not make We Are Marshall a good movie. And your logic seems a little off."A bunch of young people were killed and this is their story. Instead of just watching it and being happy with the happy ending you are miserable." What the hell? Your telling me, JUST because young people actually died, I should like the movie. So your pretty much saying that who cares about the acting, the writing, or anything else, young people actually died so if you find any flaws in the movie your a miserable *beep* I mean for god sake, Primeval was based on a true story. And that crocodile ate people with real feelings, so I have to like the movie? And what about movie critics, should Roger Ebert judge this movie different from any other movie since it was based on a true story? No because We Are Marshall is a movie, and in my opinion a pretty bad one.

reply

But why do you spend so much time on a flick with a ending you say has to be the "worst in movie history", It makes no sense And if makes no sense that means something else is going on.

reply

bialy33, I'm really sorry you didn't like this movie. I sat down to watch it this morning not expecting to like it that much myself. But I am home recovering from the croupy crud and it was on On Demand, gotta avoid comedies today because laughing only sets off another bronchial cough attack. My sister had raved about this movie to me a while back. That alone was enough to lower my expectations for it. My sister and I tend to have completely opposite reactions to movies. So I sat down this morning expecting to see exactly what you described it as being in your opening post; another cliche-filled, melodramatic tear-jerker sports movie. But it had some nice eye candy in the lead role and I do always enjoy looking at Matthew McConaughey and listening to his East Texas drawl, so I figured why not.

What a surprise it was then to find this incredible Character Study of grief, recovery and survival.

By stating that 'the ending had to be the worst endings in movie history' and thinking that the movie should have ended on the high note of the seemingly impossible win, you seem to have missed the real story the movie was telling. Just as 'Brian's Song' (while it too was a "sports movie") was a story of an incredible bond of friendship between two men who happened to play football. This movie was a tale about a community's staggering loss, their collective grief, and the lingering effects of 'survivor guilt' that happened to revolve around a football team.

The triumph of the ending did not come from the winning catch in the first home game following the tragedy. The triumph came through keeping the football program alive, despite the following losses through the remainder of the decade. The assistant coach, Red, does what he says he will do. He finishes out the year that he promised, despite being haunted by 'what was' every time he sets foot on the field. The Team Captain begins to let go of his feeling of needing to carry it all, he goes on to be a great motivator with a happy family life and apparently passes on himself much loved. And the cheerleader/narrator does leave town. She leaves what looks to be a dead end job to begin living her life again and pursuing her dreams.

reply

what a moron, i think this was a good movie, and it's based on a true story, yes the football team doesn't win many games, but it's about not giving up, the school could have stopped the program for good, but they didn't and the school and community overcame the tragedy, not everything is about winning, did this moron think this was a might ducks movie, where they get misfits together and win the big game?

reply

I've seen this movie a couple of times, and being a brit I didn't know much about Marshall University, all i'd heard was reading about aviation accidents, which is how I found out about this film, I enjoy watching films based on true stories, this film was ok in my eyes, but Matthew Mc's performance really grinded on me, I've heard the real Jack Lengyel talk and Mathhew just didn't seem to pull off any of his mannerisms at all. I thought Matthew Fox played a good part, David Strathairn was also good as well.

What I enjoyed seeing most in this movie was the friendship, a group of young men standing shoulder to shoulder in the face of this terrible tragedy, just to be able to take the field again was a massive effort in itself, and although they knew they were never going to be serious championship contenders they took to the field to honour those that could not be there.

Now onto the ending, I felt it was justified, my take on the ending was that it was totally necessary, like Jack said in the movie 'The Funerals End Today'. That game was probably the most important they ever played, to me that game was a start to the community putting some kind of closure on the incident

The narration and game videos at the end was also a nice touch, because for people who don't know about this or have heard about it, it provides a message that even when your down and out and it looks like you have no chance, that given time and hard work you can get back to your best, going from a team that had the worst record of any University in the Seventies to winning a bucketload of trophies within 3 decades just goes to show you can work your way back up

reply

Jack Lengyel: One day, not today, not tomorrow, not this season, probably not next season either but one day, you and I are gonna wake up and suddenly we're gonna be like every other team in every other sport where winning is everything and nothing else matters. And when that day comes, well thats, thats when we'll honor them.

That explains it all, right there. If you didn't like the ethos, then you should've just stopped watching as soon as that was said.

It's made from bits of real panther, so you know it's good...

Beautiful quote by Jack all about the long road to recovery.

wuhrer36d- I LOVE your last comment!

I love the ending! No they didn't win the National Championship, right then, but that wasn't the point of the movie. The point of the movie wasn't what games they won, it was that they were playing. The church scene when Coach Lengyel is talking to Red says it best "One day, not today, not tomorrow, not this season, probably not next season either but one day, you and I are gonna wake up and suddenly we're gonna be like every other team in every other sport where winning is everything and nothing else matters. And when that day comes, well thats, thats when we'll honor them." When the narrator starts "Marshall lost more football games in the 1970's than any other program in the nation ..." I lose it, because I know what's coming next. There were Championships and National titles won-I know now people will say- it was a 2-A National Championship. Going from nothing to any kind of championship in a 21 year span is amazing. I don't care if it was the toilet bowl. It takes years and years and years and more years, and millions of dollars to build college athletic programs. The same people that are complaining that the ending was bad are the same people that would say it was unrealistic had they had Marshall playing for a National Championship.

reply

Typical response really... Hollywood has preconditioned people to EXPECT everything to be perfect in the end... everyone is happy and winning and its all joyous and pretty...

being a true story life isn't like that... not real life...

the point was that the win put them on the road to recovery

it was an average movie, not terrible by any means, not oscar material either...

what you should realise is that Hollywood sadly ADDS to true stories with complete lies in order to make morons like the person who started this post happy... and still claiming it a true story, but they add lies that never happened..

they stuck to the story.... well done to them for that
