Bobby Bowden...

I loved the scene where Coach allows Jack and Red to study at WVU and offers them food, and that he allowed WVU players to place the MU logo and a cross on WVU helmets.

Coach Bowden is a legend among men not only because of his prowess as a football coach, but more because of the size of his heart and his love of Jesus, and his lack of fear of showing that love in a world that looks down on public showing of a love for Christ and that importance in the development of young minds and hearts.

I agree it was a lovely, big-hearted gesture to allow the MU logo & cross on the helmets (along with everything else he did). As Jack said, "First class".

The Bowden dialogue line, "hell, we don't play you this season" was a bit silly -- WVU had not played Marshall -- at all -- for 46 years, and would not play them again for 26 more. (Of course for most of those years MU was in a completely different NCAA division.)

So it wasn't like there was any chance at all that Marshall was going to come back and stun WVU on the field. with their knowledge of the Veer. But still it was a nice gesture on Bowden's part.

reply

I disagree with it being silly... It was allowing the Marshall coaches to keep some pride but saying "I don't care because we don't play you" instead of it looking like a charity case.

reply

Exactly. Bowden put himself in their shoes and figured he wouldn't want to be treated as a charity case so he wanted to make sure they didn't feel like charity cases.

The actual story (validated on line) is that Bowden actually directed his entire coaching staff to work with the Marshall coaching staff to a man, to teach them the veer offense, as a charity. The memorials on the WVU helmets are true, but as is pointed out above, these teams did not play each other during this era.

Yes Bowden helped the Marshall couches learn the veer, it was great kind thing to do. What you don't talk about in your praise is Bowden being one of the most dirty coaches in college football, paying players, teaching illegal blocking to try and hurt players on the other team. Bowden's teams had players arrested for attempted rape and robbery but nothing was done by Bowden or the school.

To mrbluto: A man I greatly admire once told me that "peewees and pygmies try to make themselves big by tearing down great men."

Your post reminded me of that. I wonder why.
