Should they make more movies like this?

Watching the news, I can just see them making a movie about the Russian Hockey team that crashed. That memorial mass has got to be the most theatrical thing I've ever seen. I can really see that being a movie.

I always wondered why they never made one about the University of Evansville basketball team after they all went down.

What makes this particular story (We Are Marshall) more interesting than most of the crashes of groups of athletes (and there have been a lot of them) was the conflict between the university's administration and the students over whether or not football as a sport would continue the following year. That conflict is not found in most situations. With the most recent tragedy they've already come up with a system within the league to draft players from all of the other teams in order to have the team that was devastated continue to compete.

Yeah they should, but it would be somewhere in the long future before a movie will be made about the Russian Hockey Team's plane crash. Almost a lot of times with sports movie like this, sports movie based on a true story don't usually end up being made into a movie until 20 or more years passed after the actual event happening, very few times does a sports movie come out that is based on a true story only comes out a few years after it happened like Disney's The Rookie. If you noticed the movie takes place between 1970 and 1971 and this movie came out in 2006, which is more then 30 years after the actual event.

Marshall had been approached many many times about our story and had turned everyone down. When the powers that be were approached about the "We Are Marshall" movie they promised that they would take great care in considering the feelings of the surviving family members, the school and the community. This is the reason the scene where the plane crashes the screen simply went blank. You might look at the post entitled "How Do the real relatives of the victims feel about it". There is more information about how certain things were handled in that post that might lend some insight as to why Marshall finally let the story be told.

The problem with using the Evansville story ( I am from the area) is that some of the most interesting parts of the story would not be good in the movie.

1) Future Hall of Fame basketball coach Jerry Sloan would have been on the plane, but he made the very difficult decision (his words) to resign as his alma maters head coach to take an NBA assistants job a few months before.

2) The one player on the roster that wasn't on the flight, died in a car crash months later.

The first couldn't be more than a footnote in the movie and the second would be a huge downer and be accused of stealing from Final Destination.
