Mary Doyle Kennedy was 13 years older than Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Yet,in real life, Catherine of Aragon was only 6 years older than Henry VIII. I'm not sure why they tried to play up or make their age difference that much more amplified.

An 18 yr old male marrying a 24 yr old female really does not seem that crazy.

But in this series (at least when it started), Meyers was 30 and Kennedy was 44. Having a 44 yr old woman (and she looked 44) trying to conceive on the show just seemed bizarre. They should have played it more historically.

But they cant play those roles if they dont look the part. Kennedy and Meyers did not look 6 years apart in age.

And frankly i think it was worse having Mary Tudor a small child when Henry VIII first met Anne. Considering she was 16\17 at the time.

Henry first took notice of anne on March 4, 1522 at the famous Chateau Vert pageant. At this time, Princess Mary was 6. You're about 10 years off, my friend.

When he met her in 1533.

Did you mean when he married her in 1533?

Meyers may have been 30, but he looks about 16. He's a good six to eight inches shorter than the real Henry, he does not have red hair, nor does he have a "bulk."

In other words, the age gap is the least of their problems.

The Duke of Buckingham in the first two episodes should have been their Henry. Large, fierce looking, redheaded, full of presence. Next to him, JRM looks like a twerp.

Meyers does not look 16. I'd say he could pass for 21 at the youngest. I do think he would have made a better Joffrey on GOTs than this role, but he still did a good job. That said, I thought it was strange that Henry Cavill looked older and more domineering than Meyers, and yet Cavill is actually 6 years YOUNGER than Meyers.

The reason the producers did not cast a more realistic looking Henry (IMO) was because they knew the show would have alot of sex in it and wanted to show good looking people having sex, not a fat King banging a bunch of damsels.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed the show. I just think it could have been a more intriguing plot if they cast a younger Catherine of Aragon. Make Catherine a slightly older than Henry but beautiful young woman and it would have better explained why the people of England were completely against Henry divorcing her to marry Anne. With Kennedy being so much older, it dumbed it down for the audience that Henry was dumping Catherine to get with a much younger and more attractive woman and everyone in the Kingdom and Church understood that. But it wasnt so obvious and simple in real life.

I think perhaps you're also forgetting the fact that an age gap of 6 years back then would have been about the same as or close to one of 13 years might seem now.

And, frankly, older male leads are cast alongside significantly younger female leads so often that I find this switch refreshing.

I agree with you, but also, I think that having an obviously older Catherine would have driven home the fact that she was not capable of bearing children anymore. To havve a younger actress it would take credit away from that notion. Ironically, the actress who played Catherine was expecting around the time the show was filmed.

Agreed!

I assume it was to drive home the point of her age and inability to bear any more children. I always thought they made her look older and more matronly than was necessary. When you see Natalie Dormer (Anne Boleyn) in the same scene as Maria Doyle Kennedy the difference is striking. Most people I know who watched this show already knew the general facts. Maybe they needed to play this up so the casual viewer would surely notice one of the reasons Henry wanted to have a newer and younger queen.

By this point in her life Catherine of Aragon had gone through multiple pregnancies and was perimenopausal. She was pleasingly plump as a princess, but the pregnancies and depression had led to weight gain. She was always much more serious than Henry.

In 1526, when Henry and Anne became an item, Henry was a fit 35-year-old man, and Catherine was worn out and 41. Pregnancy, multiple miscarriages, depression, weight gain, fanatical religious observance all made Catherine seem even older.

True to whom? You? And where's it written that men in general age better than women? Men and women, for the most part age the same; it's up to each to take care of themselves...and then there's genetics...

My mom is 5 years older than my father but my father looks 10 years older than her.

Agreed. Henry was a healthy 35 year old man who was still very much in his prime and could get away with acting like a 20 something. By 41, Catherine of Aragon was not wearing her years well and probably looked a lot older than her years. Her pregnancies had than their toll her and she had gained a lot of weight. By this point in their lives, she probably looked a full 15+ years older than him.....

I've posted this before in the message boards! I completely agree!! CoA looked like she could have been Henry's mom! But some people said in those days people aged a lot faster but still! That was the hardest part for me to relate to... I honestly wanted Henry to end his marriage with CoA only cause she seemed so damn old compared to him which was not what it was like in real life but I'm guessing they purposely did that So the audience would side with Henry... This is probably the one part of the series I wish they would have been more accurate about... But ¯\_(?)_/¯

I just wish they had begun the show with Henry and Katherine's marriage. They loved each other. It would have made the schism that much more heartbreaking.

Maria looked fantastic on the show, by the time she was divorced Katharine was old haggard and fat; on the show she was a MILF. It makes sense to make the age difference bigger because there was no way they would try to make Maria look so unattractive. I'm sure there were many men around Jonathan's age who would happily snuggle up to a KOA who looked like this.
This was not the youthful Katharine in her 20s, she has gone through a lot of hard years...years we didn't see on the show. If you want to see a really haggard KOA watch Henry VIII and his 6 Wives or The 6 Wives of Henry VIII.
