Season 1 Question: Why were Norfolk & Boleyn mortal enemies of Wolsey?

The central power of struggle of season 1 appears to be between Cardinal Wolsey and the faction of Norfolk, Tom Boleyn, and Brandon. Was it ever explained why the faction hated the Cardinal so much? If it was explained, I missed it.

I find Wolsey to be highly sympathetic despite his lack of high morals. So I keep asking why the faction was out to get him.

Or are we not supposed to care why they were enemies?

Thanks for any thoughts on the matter!

I think the implication was SUPPOSED to be that Norfolk / Boleyn were Reformists (Protestant) and hated Wolsey because of

a) his power and influence
b) him being favored by the king
c) his position as a cardinal within the Church

The series really places a lot of emphasis on how much the Boleyns hate Catholicism -- which does them no service, because much of what they "hate" about the Catholic Church is exactly the kind of behavior they are engaging in throughout, so it really paints them as hypocrites. =P

Brandon, though, never had any motives. He changes sides a lot.

No. Neither Norfolk, nor Brandon were reformist. Both were strict Catholic. There hatred for Wolsey had nothing to do with the reformists movement at all. They hated Wolsey because he had so much power over the king. If you wanted something from the king ,or needed something sign from the king, you had to go thru Wolsey. If you went straight to the king with your request he would run it by Wolsey first before he gave you and answer. Henry VIII relied a lot on Wolsey. So much so that they people would say that England had TWO kings. They hated Wolsey because if the king were to give out title, or deeds to certain property, Wolsey would make the final decision on who gets what, and take all the good deeds to certain land for himself. Wolsey wasn't a nobleman, he was a commonder,a lay man. He was of low birth that Henry VIII raise up high in rank (and up until Anne came along) and treated as a equal.

Wolsey was also trying to get Henry VIII to pass a law that will treat both lay man,and nobleman equal when it comes to breaking the law. In other words the rich was no longer going to get away with breaking the law.

Wolsey was also supposed to get Henry's first marriage annulled and wasn't succeeding. He also didn't think much of Anne.
