English Major

Victor's line:

"I was an English major. What's an English major going to do in the real world? Nothing. So I went to law school."

Purest truth ever spoken in films.

reply

Substitute "Anthropology" for "English" and that line would apply to me. Indeed the most truthful statement ever made by a lawyer in film.

or a liberal arts major

reply

Agreed, in a truly vocational sense (coming from an English/Psych double major person here) but when it comes to enriching life in general, broadening the mind, and learning to think, English/Arts/Social Sciences are, in my opinion, invaluable.

reply

LOL....
An English or perhaps a degree in Anthropology, would give you great skills to converse with others while standing in the unemployment line.

Sadly, universities have become training ground for careers. It wasn't always that way, but that's the world we live in today. What I find more trouble is how many students look down on liberal arts studies and majors, the attitude of "This has nothing to do with my life."

On the other hand, it's pretty rare that someone wouldn't have to work after college, and they might as well get the job training there because they're not getting it in high school.

"comparative literature" would also fit perfectly.

Ditto a Certificate in Gerontology or Human Services. You need at least a Master's to get anywhere in those majors.
Trust me, I know.

Its extremely sad that some college degrees are often so obsolete now. And its VILE that colleges offer degrees that they themselves know are USELESS!

Anybody see Serial? Very funny movie.

Anyway, Martin Mull had a line (talking to his wife, Tuesday Weld):

"You're going to get a job? You've got a degree in English Literature. What are you going to do, go door-to-door and explain the hidden meanings of Huckleberry Finn?"

Same vein.

Yes, you might not be able to make money. So how would you support yourself? But you might be able to give more of yourself if you choose your life instead of having life choose you.
