Ridiculous scenario. Decompression periods are built into that way of life. The effective performer who gets disgusted, weary, screams "I quit", and all other variations, is allowed to mull things over, take whatever time he needs, come back when he's ready, make a non-emotional decision etc.
The last chapter involving Crowe and DeCaprio was stupid beyond desciption, for this and multiple other reasons.

Anyway the killing of the architect might have had something to do with it since they set him up. You might remember he had said he was out at that point. At any rate I don't think having him quit hurt the story in any way.
