Why such bad reviews?

I thought this was a fairly interesting spy flick, the whole love interest felt a little forced but other than that I would give this 7/10, not sure why this was such a failure...

It didn't get that bad reviews.

51 on rotten tomatoes is pretty lousy...

reply

You serious? I consider anything above 50 on RT decent. RT is harsh man.

reply

I guess I feel like this deserved more love I mean its not a classic or anything but I thought it was better than 51...

Lol I didn't even need that much, as soon as the Doctor said "Aisha!" I knew it was her.

I thought it was definitely better than most spy/action/thriller movies. I say a solid 8/10, considering the genre.

DiCaprio spoke Arabic in it for Christ's sake! That alone legitimizes it more than half the lameass spy movies out there.

The plot was predictable and the dialog was uninspiring. I practically knew what was going to happen next throughout the whole movie. The only surprising thing was that Leo got rescued by the Jordanians instead of his CIA buddies. But by then I didn't really care either way since his character was so uninteresting.

Hollywood movies don't make movies about war. Not real war anyway, they're mostly blockbuster films with lots of explosions that glorify the American military and make the people they're fighting against look like a bunch of incompetent idiots.

Real war results in lots of deaths on both sides, horrible atrocities and countless innocents getting killed. I don't think I've ever seen a hollywood movie that portrays war as it is, its a very santised version. If you want real portrayal of what war is like, read a few biographies written by soldiers or watch documentaries. It'll blow your mind about the depths people would sink to.

But that's getting a bit offtopic. This isn't a war movie anyway, its a spy thriller movie.

BTW Ruby did you like pearl harbour?

What did you think of Saving Private Ryan?
I saw a documentary about it, with an interview of a DDay survivor who was asked what it was like and he responded, "Did you see Saving Private Ryan? It was exactly like that."

So you say the film was predictable and you knew what was going to happen yet you couldn't even predict such an obvious thing that Hani would be the one who was going to save Ferris and you even found that surprising.
Sorry but your accusing the film as predictable is utterly EPIC FAIL!

I know its an old post but i needed to answer this, lol. ;)

I suspect that this topic might be overdone.

I found the movie a bit dull at times, also confusing and it has been done before. Good acting for the most part though.

reply

For me the one good thing about this movie was the acting but my first thought when I saw Di Caprio I thought to my self: "that's a watered down poor mans George Clooney from Syriana" and even if that movie sucked this wasnt much better and Russell Crowe's character wasn't believable for me from start to finish.
Not Hani either or any of the others it just didnt work.

reply

The movie did quite well outside the US, but crashed miserably in the US.

I suppose it doesn't quite stick to the American perception of the Middle-East; that may have been the problem.

reply

The prospect of Ferris lasting more than five minutes as a civilian put it over the top as a believable story. Other than that it was interesting.

I really enjoyed this last night...weak part of the plot was the girl of course. but prior to that, it was going strongly. It felt like an 7.5-8 to me.

I'm not sure where the 7/10 comes from. I think that people who are too dumb to be voting b/c they didn't "get" the movie are the ones downvoting it harshly. I mean, what did they expect? Another bourne-type movie?

The film definitely made me wonder about the types of lives covert ops people have...obviously it's really hard to have a normal one, and they have make alot of personal sacrifices in order to serve and protect the United States.

For the movie it pretends to be, a spy action-thriller with the budget it had. It didn't impress me at all. The fast action was good for what it is but it didn't draw me in for the spy thriller bit. And the forced girlfriend "drama" was just a bit cheap. To add to this it was just confusing, DiCaprio going to all those different region's just felt unnecessary, perhaps i just didn't "get" it, and perhaps bad reviewers where "dumb" like me.

Maybe not the proper way to work out a grade value, but the sad and inaccurate (location) news clip about Amsterdam (home town) being bombed lowered it some more. Assuming like i read on these forums, most locations are inaccurate.

Only good thing about this movie: DiCaprio finally being tortured for all harm he has done to the world by helping Titanic in to existence.

5/10

It was a reasonable film, nothing more. It won't stand the test of time. Aleady there is The Hurt Locker.

To be fair, I like what Ridley did with the Middle East in this movie.

He's respectful, and portrays it as the complicated, yet fully human culture that it is.

And Leonardo delivers his last speech with conviction. Like he believes.

It's a'right.

I personally think not much wrong with this film. I have seen films with 6.9 rating at the time a lot worse then this. Think it has gone up to 7.1 since I last looked. And I honestly have myself just decided to make my mind up about films. As people have to many different views
