UPDATE: Another person dies emulating this idiot!

In a telephone interview Monday night, the boy's father David Croom said his 18-year-old son Johnathan was grieving the end of a recent relationship and "headed out to try to find himself."

Hutson said earlier that text messages between Jonathan Croom and a friend indicated Croom wanted to run away.

Croom also talked to his parents about Christopher McCandless, whose journey to Alaska was documented in the book "Into the Wild." McCandless gave up his worldly goods to live in the Alaska wilderness, only to die there, perhaps from eating wild potatoes.

"I think we have kind of a combination there," Hutson said earlier Monday. "He talked with his parents about `Into the Wild,' and in text messages we've looked at, he does specifically talk about running away, kind of just running away from his life."

McCandless didn't die from wild potatoes so that's a mistake.

reply

Yeah, it's sad. McCandless's story is interesting, but I don't think people get the real point of the movie -- his idealism brought him suffering and death. His story's a warning, not something to emulate.

Sounds like the Croom kid committed suicide, rather than trying to live off nature for a while. Too bad, because somebody might've been able to find him and save him if he'd just been camping. It's very sad for his friends and family.

reply

But he was obsessed with this movie and saw it many times. He did want to trek alone in the wild just like Chris.

CNN's Piers Morgan covered him last night but didn't even mention him tonight because of the Syria crap!

reply

...didn't even mention him tonight because of the Syria crap
Hardly surprising. The situation in Syria is WAY more newsworthy.

Even CNN covered the story of Jon Croom, who idolized Chris, was found dead.

This idiot must of think that he is some kind of South American or African Native who can survive in the wilderness, without much supplies the reason why south american and african tribes people can do these things is because they were born into it and their people have thousands of years of experience, what a moron I don't feel an inch or sorry for this fool, if your going into the wilderness to live off the land at least buy the necessary tools that you may need just in case you don't need to use them their their just in case, of emergency.

reply

I think we'll hear more about Jon Croom in the future and how he emulated this dummy and it ended up killing him too!

In that CNN article it even said a couple people have died looking for his stupid bus. A lady from Sweden died looking for it a few years ago!

Power bar cliff bars, freeze dried foods meat, almonds beans, thermal clothing, hand held GPS that shows you were fish water, and nearby location are locks your locations and can guide you back to were you started, perfected fishing tools, Spot GPS, signal flares, 21st century medicines, snake bite proof clothing, shotgun for bears, 100 percent detail maps of your location, survival guides books, written by people who were their years even decades before you.

Our government should start fining people, for going camping without a Hand held GPS, two way radio ham radio and signal/mirror/smoke/flares for helicopters, getting lost because of their own stupidity.

If you let people know were your going, you should always, have enough food and supplies, just in case you don't make it back, to your original location, then your love one or friends will notice the deadline and call for help and rescue should come looking for you, hell you can even email your love ones your exact location with your hand held GPS, the world has been 99.999 percent mapped out, don't matter were your going, there are always dozens of people in the area that knows how to survive in the wilderness, and have written books about it, there is no reason why anyone should die or even get lost, in the wilderness, in the 21st century, but it happens every day, and the number one reason is that they got lost from their original location, never my GPS stop working, I always face palm when its on the news.

Just google it, every day, lost or attack in the Mountains, Wilderness, Forest, Desert.

Chris was never lost. The bus is parked right next to a fairly well used hunting trail. Some parts are overgrown, but theres no mistaking that its a trail. In that part of Alaska cell phone coverage is just about nonexistant, and even satellite phone coverage is spotty. Also there are no snakes in Alaska.

Carrying all of those "modern" supplies kind of defeats the purpose of living off the land. He had a ton of guts but was in way over his head. There is plenty of food in that area. I've fished the Teklanika and Toklat rivers, and they are full of fish. It doesn't appear that Chris even attempted to catch fish a single time!!! And yes, he would have been much better off with a shotgun, supplied with bird shot (theres a ton of birds up there) and slugs or buck for bigger game. He got very lucky killing that moose with a .22. Theres a reason it's not legal to hunt large game with small caliber firearms. Too much chance of only wounding the animal, making it much more dangerous to animals and humans alike.

But I agree that when some idiot gets themselves in this kind of situation, they should be responsible financially for the cost of their rescue.

Sounds like you got the answer, joekill162, none of them had. Let us know when/if you get back!

reply

Funny you say that, I just saw this movie and your answer was my conclusion. He wanted to be free and such and go into the wild but all it brought was alot suffering.

I dont like not knowing

reply

That young man committed suicide. He was not emulating Chris McCandless, he did not go into the wild on an adventure, he went there with one intention-to die. He didn't even last one night. He didn't want to survive.

reply

eating wild potatoes ?

no wonder he got fired from Burger King !!!!!!!!

reply

It's too bad that some people see this movie as inspirational. Dropping out and going on an adventure is great. But living in isolation in the wild is dangerous. He was younger than Chris and probably very immature.

reply

I’d hardly blame all this on Chris. Many people have run away from life and headed into the wild. Years ago my brother inlaw and his friends had plans to do something just like that. We live in the south and they planned to work their way up to Alaska and work on fishing boats. Thankfully they didn’t.

Here, I'm sending you a condom. Please don't reproduce.

reply

Anyone who recreates this journey, which unequivocally ended in death, is suicidal. 'Nuff said.

reply

Another huh? How many people have died doing this?
