Was anyone around when this was actually happening?

Does anyone remember this story even before the Maysles' did the original documentary? There was quite a few news paper clippings shown. Has anyone actually been to Grey Gardens at any time?

I remember it being in "Enquirer type" papers. Back then you just assumed everything was made up, just to sell papers. There were really goofy stories about strange people....I just thought it was funny, like Mad Magazine.

Jackie O. was on the cover of EVERY magazine, newspaper, pamphlet, flyer, everything!!! When I saw all the photos of the two women I didn't know if it was for real or not.

Gail Sheehy's article in New York Magazine came out way back in 1972, several years before the documentary. She I think was a neighbor of the Edies. You can pull it up from this site somewhere. I did. It too was fascinating.

Thank you for posting the link, Benji. (Good dog! :) I'd heard about that article but had never read it before. Fascinating.

From New York Magazine, to the documentary, to the musical, to the HBO movie - the lives of these women have made waves in the entertainment world for several decades now. Good entertainment, too! They'd be proud.

I remember when the story came out in the Enquirer in the 70's. I just caught a glimpse of Edie , looking quite crazy in the yard, and wondering why Jackie wasn't helping them. This was supposed to be her favorite aunt, how could she let her get to this point with all her millions?

diving bellemc: The musical (also aptly titled GREY GARDENS) opened Off-Broadway in early 1996. Then in the fall, it transferred to Broadway, winning 3 Tonys: Lead Actress in a Musical (Christine Ebersole) Featured Actress in a Musical (Mary Louise Wilson), and costume design. Interesting thing, Ebersole played middle-aged Big Edie in Act I (another actress played the young Little Edie), and then middle-aged Little Edie in Act II. Wilson played the elderly Big Edie in Act II. (I hope that wasn't confusing.)
