Accent?

What is the name of that accent?

reply

What I find interesting about the accent is it seems to be unique to this specific family (Bouvier). Lee Radziwill has it too, as did her sister Jackie.

reply

It used to be very common, but noticeably disappearing from the eastern seaboard since 1980s.

Some call it Yankee Aristocrat.

Mid-Atlantic accent

Jackie Kennedy and the Roosevelts had it. Eleanor Roosevelt had a very pronounced mid Atlantic accent.

It more or less doesn't really exist anymore.

reply

In the documentary they both talk like Edith Bunker.

reply

Lots of people in older movies had this accent.

reply

It has long been referred to as the "Locust Valley Lockjaw", associated with the aristocrats that resided on Long Island's North Shore.

reply

Locust Valley Lockjaw is a new term to me. I'd add Kate Hepburn to the list of those who spoke this way.
