Ending is just plain bad

Out of the remaining survivors why would you "kill" jason and then escort his body to the water to dump it. Why not just burn it? Chop his head off, Or why not just get the hell out there? The final scene takes place at night and yet when they dump the body its morning, so we are supposed to be believe they stayed there the entire night just do that? Absolutely ridiculous even by horror movie standards. Cmon now. The actual movie I felt was pretty good, and the actors did a good job. Why ruin it with an ending like that.

For sequel purposes.

And for one final jump scare.

Lazy excuse. There are plenty of others ways to set up a sequel that don't involve staying up all night at Chrystal Lake and the n dumping the body in the river, without cutting the head off or doing anything. Anybody that went through what they just did, would have left as soon as they had him in that grinder.

The ending is a dream sequence.

There's no reason they would dump his body.
All their friends are dead, so they would need the killer's body to remain so there's proof that they aren't the ones that murdered everyone.

And there's also no reason Jason would still be alive, at least not alive enough to do whatever he did at that last moment.

Was this confirmed? I've seen this movie 10 times and I never knew that.

You don't need confirmation because there can be no confirmation except for whats in the movie itself.

A movie is how you interpret. To my logic, the ending is a dream sequence. It makes no sense otherwise.

I see it as the brother or sister having a nightmare about it.
This could have been a launching point for the sequel, with it beginning with the brother or sister having nightmares about 'him'. Their sibling would assure them that he's dead. Then to get over the nightmares and the trauma, they'd go back to Crystal Lake. And maybe Jason wasn't dead.

Or maybe Jason's body went missing when they escaped and now they have nightmares of what they could have done to ensure he died (like putting the body in the lake).

But with it being just this movie, I just see it as them being haunted by him. Similar to Alice's dream of Jason at the end of the first film.
