Why was 'L' always eating?

I've never seen the anime series or read the manga. In fact I had no idea that this was based on either one until I came on here. So I have absolutely no background information on this. I'm pretty sure I got the gist of most of it but I have yet to see the second one and I plan to. I may even watch this one again. But the one thing I could not figure out is why the character L was always eating and drinking. He almost seemed like a little kid with his food too. Can someone explain this if it doesn't give away too much for the next part? Thanks!

Yes, I was amazed at that as well - I thought he must be under a constant sugar shock and hopping around like mad with all the sweet stuff he was eating and drinking.

At one point he described Kira to be like a little child that cannot lose (I forgot what else he was saying) and, thus, being like L. So maybe this food habit is the one of a child.

He explains it in L Change the World that sugar is essential energy for the brain, also caffeine helps keep you mentally sharp and alert. He also drinks a lot of coffee and tea.

Interesting that Light was his equal without it.

In the manga L mentions that all the thinking he does burns through a lot of calories.
