why is it in english?

why does the film have a lot of english in it?

reply

It does?
The Death Note is in English because when Ryuuk put instructions in it he assumed someone who spoke English would pick it up, as English is like the world's most popular language.
I think anyway.

reply

Yeah, this made me wonder. I mean, it is produced in Japan for a Japanese audience so it would make sense to all be in Japanese. All the signs and other written stuff is Japanese. If it was made in the US (as it maybe soon) it would all be in English, not the most popular language, manderin.
Seems odd.

reply

Yeah, but Japanese people love English (in songs etc), and Mandarin is only the world's most popular language because it's spoken in China, which has over a billion people. In terms of countries that speak it, the world's most popular languages are Spanish and English. Ryuk wrote the rules of the Death Note, assuming English was the most popular language, and dropped it randomly.

reply

Yeah, also many whose native language isn't English speak English (like me), but I don't think there are many non-Chinese who speak Mandarin.

reply

remember it was Ryuk who decided to put it in english so the whole 'japanese audience for japan' argument was put to rest in the first or second episode. but i wanted to comment on the manderin crap you said. just because they have the most fluent speakers dosnt mean its the most popular language. countries world wide make you take an english class in school, including japan, so it makes sense that Ryuk would put the instructions in english. and fv€# china.

reply

and fv€# china.
What exactly was the point of this? How about you keep your bigotry to yourself. No one asked your opinion about China. All you did here was make yourself look like a (most likely racist) prick.

Because it's a major international language, a widely spoken language across the entire planet, due to the legacy of British imperialism and the present global hegemony of US imperialism in the world. Therefore no matter where in the world Ryuk dropped his death note, it would be relatively likely to be picked up by someone who understands English. He could put it in, say, Chinese, but then if he dropped his death note in Turkey, it would be unlikely someone would understand it. Whereas if he put it in English, it would have reasonable odds of being understood if it was found in either Turkey or China or anywhere else. Japan is only one country out of about 200, and it's the only one where Japanese is really widely spoken. So Ryuk wasn't going to write the instructions in Japanese, in case he ended up dropping the death note somewhere else instead.
