One thing I don't get about the movie *SPOILERS*

So it's revealed at the end that L survives being killed by Rem by writing his name in the Death Note first. He then states that he's extended his life by about 20 days. But why only 20 days? Why not 50 years or something? Did L have a death wish? I know L wasn't a 'live life to the fulliest' type of guy but I never saw him as a miserable emo who didn't care whether he died or not. Sure he was okay with dying if he had no other choice but here it didn't seem nessersary to give himself such a short lifespan.

I don't know, what do you guys think? Am I missing something here?

Yeah, dramatic context :oP

Yes, you're missing something. The start of the movie explains that the Death Note only operates within 23 days in the human calendar, so that's what L was limited to. 50 years wouldn't work.

According to that wikia, the 23 day rule only aplies in the context of 'death by disease'. I can't read Japanese, so if L wrote this in the Death Note then I guess it's my mistake. But if that's the case why did he write specifically '23' in the notebook. Was that just to make sure he got every day available?

The maximum is 23 days you can write something in advance in the Death Note.

if he exceeded that, say, wrote his name and that he died in 50 years, that would be something the Death Note could not do - especially if his natural lifespan won't even go to 50 years. Therefore, to close the loop, the Death Note would just give him a heart attack there & then.
