Where do I stop?

I'm watching this show on Netflix, it has a great case, and some really sloppy writing. It's a total soap, with storylines going all over the place. I know it was canceled before things really got resolved, so for my best viewing pleasure, where should I stop to maximize the number of episodes and minimize my unfulfillment? Currently am a couple episodes into season 3, and getting a little tired with the continual rewriting of the backstory. But for the most part I enjoy the current storylines.

If you dislike re-writes of the past, stop at the last episode of season 4 and pretend there was never a season 5, which is what many fans prefer to do as well.

At the start of season 5 they sort of tried to 'reboot' the show, but there were too many continuity-glitches, inaccuracies, discrepancies and WTF-moments. Season 5 is so bad that I can only pick scenes I like and not one entire episode.

Just my opinion, of course, others might disagree.

Stilling pretending that season five was a dream :)

I have NO objection to seeing either Kevin or Scotty or both in the shower. 
(Sorry, showing my age, still NOT over that stupid Dallas-cliffhanger. )

Fan fic is needed - picturing that scene so perfectly

reply

I wouldn't mind writing the scene, but I can't imagine it as new cliffhanger, I'd come in conflict with my own season 6+7 .

But I often would have liked a re-write of season 5. It wasn't entirely bad, it had SOME good ideas like finishing Justin/Rebecca (EvC wanted to leave and they give it a good ending) and bringing back Tyler and I like the Saul/Jonathan storyline.

I had no objection to Brody, but the whole paternity-doubt was too much. I think we've had a paternity-issue nearly every season. Someone either gets De-Walkered or Add-Walkered.

I certainly would have preferred a better sent off for Robert McCallister. He was not my favorite character, but he was important enough and pulling the plug on him/his funeral in less than 2 minutes was a bit too abrupt for me. And what bugged me even more is that Kitty, within less than 2 episodes already fell for another guy.

And I would have preferred a better relationship between Nora/Holly over the Holly-losing-her-memory-storyline.

There were some good moments in season five, but I agree that the show changes tone once Rob Lowe leaves. So if I were you, I would stop at the end of season 4.

reply

Yeah, I'm watching Series 5 now and it's nowhere near as good as the previous seasons. I'm only sitting through it because I've watched all the other seasons. It wasn't the same once Robert was gone

S5 spoilers.

B+S missed Robert. S5 also sees a diminished, mentally-impaired Holly which detracts from the show and reflects the serious issue of brain injury in the shallowest way possible (it compared unfavourably to the chemo storyline, which was done well). That silly wooden, stereotypical Frenchman is in it far more, possibly in an attempt to compensate for the loss of
Robert and the partial loss of Tommy.

you can blame rob lowe on the fact that they got rid of the character the way they did. he i remember said that's the way he wanted his character to go. i didn't think they were going to do that though but they did. i don't hate season 5 to be honest. having kitty get with a guy who was what 20 or whatever the age he was at. i think was bad story telling. but i'm not going to deny they had some speed bumps in season 5. i say watch season 5 just to say you saw them all.

it's not like there is a lot of episodes anyways. a little over 100 ain't it?

as another one here said: stop after Season 4.
Season 5 was bad, especially because they made Sarah not being her dad's daughter :(

Season 5 is definitely the weakest season but, IMO, it's still worth a watch.

Season 1-4,IMO, are all on a similar level of greatness.

Season 5 has no Rob Lowe, none of the Walker VS Harper drama, and none of the Ojai drama either. And I think those three things are missed deeply in it. The season is also a lot more light-hearted, becoming more like a comedy in some episodes than a dramedy. The final episode, however, redeems it for me because it ends things nicely.

5x01 wraps up the finale of S4 nicely and makes the better ending. Most of s5 was crap but there were a few good episodes and great scene just mucked in with some crap.
